How Netflix killed DStv in SA

Multichoice's Supersport offering and coverage of major sport events are amazing - I must give it to them. What I tried to say is that you can get a streaming service for +- R200 p/m that include all the major channels over the world including major sport channels. I am not sure about the legal part of it all, but it is available if you want it. Netflix is a good offering, and if they start to offer major sport coverage form all over the world, then I am afraid Dstv is in a lot of trouble. It is just the sport offering that is keeping them afloat - at least in my book

What the lies or the other part? The article starts by saying dstv is dead but then goes on to say the number of dstv subsribers are growing

You cannot compare DSTV to more than likely not very legal services when you not paying the true cost. That is disingenuous.

How much do you think a sports service would cost? if you think it will cost less than DSTV you will be surprised.

Netflix wont venture into sports they know it is way too expensive.

Um DSTV are as stubborn as the distributors that held DVD distribution rights back in the day, weren't willing to accept change and adapt and have a God complex after many years without competition.

DSTV you better hope that someone keeps that life support system on, that plug is dangerously close of being pulled!
 
Netflix proved that one thing..

Give people what they want, at a fair price, and they will not pirate.

DSTV has its use, my computer-illiterate parents for example, but there are better offerings at much lower prices now.
All it takes to change over is a small adjustment in your consumption method and/or habits.
 
Years later, we are still waiting for the ever 'imminent' launch of standalone DStv Now offering... How useless can you be? This was a sure way of getting some customers back.

Amzon Firestick. My BIL in SA was against it. Told him about it. A friend of mine helped them and Bob's your uncle. Dropped DSTV like in a hotcake.

You're assuming that everybody NEEDS to do more. An entry level fibre package also doesn't cut it if you want to do more. I think it is a fair comparison, would you necessarily go to an expensive buffet just because it offers more food or will you only buy what you need?

Netflix will never have the sports package the sport fanatics want for less than Dstv's, and it won't fit in with their "flix" image in any case.

You're assuming R1000/month is the only option. The majority of South Africans pay way less than R500 for their content.

Well I'm not going to discuss my personal situation or why I think it is justified. But nobody lives on R350/month alone. Everybody on a social grant has some form of main income be it only through family members. So other people, like me, are using it for all sorts of things.

An entry level fibre package being? Anyway, any level of fibre is capable of doing more than dstv. But impress me. Reply to this using your DSTV decoder.

Haha, :ROFL: that's a fallacy.

But let's get real here. A 10mbps line won't cut it if you regularly do other stuff while watching tv. So you're already getting into the price range of Dstv premium which not all people are on. Then you have to add Netflix or whatever and you can't include illegal content for a fair comparison.

One thing all the Dstv naysayers never speak about is the exorbitant cost of fibre where a 100Mbps connection should actually cost R200-R300. I do not want to pay +R1000 for my internet and entertainment just so I can do all the "extra things" you mention, Dstv at around R600 suits me just fine for my main entertainment. I'd prefer to just add R200 to do these other things. To me it's more the fibre providers in SA that need to catch a wake-up and until they do Dstv is going nowhere and offers perfectly fine value for most.
