Hi all,

so I was wondering,

how do the traffic police/JMPD/SAPS determine who to stop (or not ) at traffic stops?

is it a profile thing? a car thing? or what criteria exactly? as it seems random sometimes.

I swear I been stopped maybe once before, when others who I drove with and drive a expensive car get stopped multiple times at roadblocks.....

Im genuinely curious to know? as it seems I almost NEVER get stopped,
cars behind me will get stopped, cars in front of me will get stopped, but Rarely me, why exactly?

I have never been stopped or asked for my license in 5 years of driving.

You answered your own question....

Its random, unless as you get nearer you exhibit behaviour that makes them suspicious.

The story of your Picanto has gone viral and they're worried you won't be able to start it if they stop you :D

Been stopped once recently as in been picked out of the traffic flow, they spotted that my numberplates didn't have an SABS mark.

pulled over a couple times when I was the only car on the road and they were doing license spot checks.

Otherwise, I generally cruise through.

Whenever I had my one Indian friend in the car......no jokes

I don't stop at JMPD road blocks, I just keep driving.
I only stop for SAPS... and those are quite rare.

Ive never been stopped in my car - white male, driving a 5 year old conservative BMW 3 series. My GF on the other hand, drives a black SUV with tinted windows. Been pulled over 3 times in the last 6 months.

Stopped about 3 times in about 20 years.

Best was when traffic officer looked at drivers license and didn't even notice it had expired :D

Used to get pulled over frequently when driving my old A3 (three times in one day as I recall).

Hardly got pulled over when driving my Civic.

Pulled over once in my Accord.

Got pulled over frequently in my S2000.

Haven't been pulled over in my (boring) Subaru yet.

Verdict (based on my anecdotal evidence) - Drive boring/inexpensive looking cars if you don't want to be pulled over.

I heard from an SAPS cop once that I'm more likely to get pulled over because of my long hair and tattoos, haven't really found that to be the case though.

Slightly OT

Tshwane Metro Police is busy in force today. Town crawling with them and road block on Hans Strydom (Solomon Mahlangu) at about 11:05

Is that a good idea? Can't you be arrested for not stopping?

Not yet.... I just point at myself and mouth "me"??? Then I look behind me to see if there are any other vehicles.
The cop thinks I am confused. Always worked so far.

I never got stopped or pulled over until I had to drive a rental Corolla for 2 weeks in 2015. Got pulled over twice by the JMPD at the Malibongwe on-ramp as well as at the Grasmere Toll Plaza on X-Mas day. Never again since.
