How streaming is killing linear TV

That is simply the fundamental difference between how the internet is sold and how TV is sold. In 2003 DStv cost R300 rand pm for pretty much the same service you get now. In 2003 I paid nearly a grand a month for a 500kpbs DSL line.

Now I pay R600 p/m for 4 meg fiber and it will probably get upgraded to a 10 meg line somewhere in the upcoming year, I will now pay nearly half for 20 times the speed and data.

While Dstv costs nearly a grand, that is three times more than in 2003 and you really don't get much more than you did then.

If you factor in all the payed content then I probably spend in the same league as a premium subscription on these luxuries but unlike with multi choice the internet keeps giving me more and costing me less.

The biggest problem with DSTV and why the fee is so high is because of sport, if they didn't have to pay millions for the rights to sports the premium would be a lot cheaper. That's the bulk of the fee right there.

You know what I'm calling BS on that, the soccer rights is what costs them the most and they are willing to sell you a subscription with every football league in Europe and Africa on the cards for R400 bucks while the rugby, cricket, and f1 which is a drop in the ocean compared to the football has to be behind an R900 paywall.

what is the real difference between why football subscription cost half of rugby, cricket and f1 sub? The demographic, who are the football fans in this country, black people. who watches cricket and rugby, white people. They are more than willing to make a deal to go after the black consumer but hey us whiteys have no such luck, we have to pay double for our sport.

And I tell you what that is the reason why this white person will pay three grand a month for all my various internet pleasure but those cuants will never see any of my money

90% of the population don't have Netflix and most still have DSTV.

Might be eating my words soon as Vumatel is planning to aggressively get fibre in the townships for R89/month starting with Alex.

This was already announced in 2017 so not sure how far they've progressed.

DSTV don't realize they won't have exclusive sport for long. The demand for streaming sport is getting much bigger in Europe and I assume we will have access to it sooner rather than later. Netflix is great, Showmax is pathetic. What they advertise as new, is sometimes 2-3 seasons old. I wish I had fibre by me, but Telkom is only worried about JHB, CPT etc. They forget the country areas in SA. Further their services sucks, gave up on them when they could not deliver my router after I upgrade to a 4Meg line in 2017. 16 months later and I still use my same router from before I applied for an upgrade.
