How Telkom became cool

Yeah 10 years ago I had 2 meg adsl, when I moved 3 years later I had to get Iburst cause Telkom didn't have any ports available. Eventually after 4 years I got 2 meg ADSL again. The last three years I've managed to boost that to 4 meg and that's it.
LTE in my area non existant, fibre runs about 500 m away as well. Yeah so I'm pretty much in the same boat as I was.

Well my personal experience is that Telkom Mobile (3 years to date) is very good and my average spend is 30-40% of what it was with Vodacom. Telkom Openserve 100mbit/s Fibre (6 months or so) has been a rock solid experience so far. My opinion is they need to make their fibre more competitive in terms of pricing and I'd be even more happy.

Yes! The line charges are insane, it's cheaper for me to stay on 10Mbps DSL than it is to move to 10Mbps Fiber, no motivation to swap if I have to pay installation if you aren't someone who is "tech savvy" and want the latency difference/upload increase.

Well, I went from 512Kbps a long while ago (think 2004 or so?), to 1Mbps, to 4Mbps (2010), to 12Mbps in 2012ish, to 10Mbps 2014ish. Still at 10Mbps 3 years later with only data prices having substantially decreased since I got it.

In my case my estate was approached by Telkom - they installed fibre to all homes regardless of if they were Telkom customers or even wanted it and migrated existing Telkom DSL customers over to Telkom Fibre. Zero cost for installation/upgrade.

Never thought I would say this...
A few weeks back, my landline was down and DSL downloads pathetic.
I reported this online, and after a bit of following up, the problem was sorted.
This week, my bill was strangely lower than normal - I then noticed "Service Interruption Discount"!
When I mentioned this on FaceBook, a number of mates had the same experience..
I have never experienced a gesture like this before, from any Company!

Why would you not get a discount when the service is down?

Well, I went from 512Kbps a long while ago (think 2004 or so?), to 1Mbps, to 4Mbps (2010), to 12Mbps in 2012ish, to 10Mbps 2014ish. Still at 10Mbps 3 years later with only data prices having substantially decreased since I got it.

I got upgraded in 2006 to 4mbps, still can't get anything faster on ADSL. 11 years later.. sigh

Yep, but they stopped the free install last month.

Estates, flats etc they still do without even asking. They put the infrastructure in just so it's there.

I still maintain... Telkom has very good value for money products, both fixed and mobile. Even the infrastructure isn't that bad.

Where they fail dismally is to actually service their customers. Any sort of query from sales to cancellation and every interaction in between is a nightmare.

No, fixed is only good value for money in relation to mobile. Compared to every other fiber provider (besides MTN/Vodacom) they're a lot less competitive.
