How to get Telkom FTTH line without data?

I ordered my fibre line from webafrica a week ago. Even though it looks like you cannot order the line and data separately from them, when you actually place the order you can. It asks you separately to choose the line then data. The 100 line itself is R 850 a month. Then I presume you can get data from somewhere else.

When I login to their website an view my services the line and data are separate.

Why do that though when ISPAfrika has 100Mbps line rental for R729? A R120pm saving on line rental is nothing to turn your nose up at.

There is and always has been a system... from what I hear the person capturing the order placed it incorrectly on said system and it got... lost.

Webafrica has zero installation fee. And I have had good ADSL with them

The free installation is good value but I'm guessing it requires a 24 month contract, which I'm not keen on. Also, I'd have to take the 500GB package with them, as the 300GB package one down isn't big enough. On 100Mbps that's R1748pm. Going with ISPAfrika and Afrihost has allowed me to have a 400GB @ 100Mbps for R1.2k, with both month-to-month. And the free Simfy is awesome.

Webafrica is month to month. If you cancel then you have to pay the installation fee and if you cancel within 6 months you have to pay for the router, so it's a risk I'm taking that I won't want to cancel.

If it comes to it I can still cancel my data from them and get from ISPAfrica in which case I will only be paying 100 a month more, which is an ok price to pay for free installation.

At certain line speeds and usage levels it might certainly be good value to go with WA. It was just at the 100Mbps level that I found them overpriced.

ISPAfrika has expensive data - R1000 for 200GB last I checked. Get your data from Afrihost or Crystal Web if you have issues with Web Africa someday.

One of the reasons I didn't commit to a long term contract with ISPAfrika was because the free router wasn't very good. It was only worth R500 and didn't have enough ports on the back to replace my current primary router (I have two more used as wifi extenders). The cheapest FTTH router that Web Africa sells is the router I ordered from them - the Zyxel SBG3300-N for R1.8k. Is this what they're giving you for free?

The invoice says TP link ARCHER C2 Router, I haven't received it yet though.

Has anyone done this successfully? We just got fibre in our area. I would like to rent the line and keep my existing vox fat pipe account that was linked to ADSL of that is even possible?

ISPAfrika is cheaper, so why not go through them? R729pm for a 100Mbps line.

Crystal Web also offer just the line. If you don't mind paying the normal price of R849pm I'd feel more comfortable having the line with them.

My concern is that the vox account won't work on fibre. Ispafrika was not keen when I ask if I can use existing isp data. Think they just wanted to sell me higher priced data.

Any data account will work on a fibre line. It was a mistake to discuss alternative data accounts with ISPAfrika. They're clearly subsidising the lines in the hope that you buy data from them.

Got this reply from Vox this morning - Not so sure it will work:

Can I use my existing fatpipe account that I used for ADSL?
Although the FatPipe packages are the same, we need to resell Fatpipe package that is provisioned for FTTH. We will time this in accordance with the cancellation of your existing FatPipe package to avoid any double billing.

You are asking companies that sell dedicated fibre packages at a premium whether cheaper stuff will work. All you're doing is making enemies for yourself. Obviously they will not respond favourably.

Any data account will work, and they all go up to 100Mbps if they come from a top ISP like Crystal Web, Afrihost, Web Africa and Vox.

The response from Vox indicates that they have a peak information rate of 40Mbps assigned to the capped packages they sell, and have to manually intervene to adjust the backend to switch to a dedicated 100Mbps profile. ISPs do this to prevent possible issues when the network contends. If the network controllers know that the network needs to contend and therefore shape some usage according to the shaper setup for that specific package, it will try to allocate the full PIR value to that specific account's traffic in, simple terms. If 1% of your client base is on 100Mbps it doesn't make sense to change all existing packages to support that speed, because when the network contends, the traffic controllers will think it has less spare capacity available than it actually does in reality, because the PIR is more than double what 99% of users require. Another example: set PIR TO 100000Mbps for one account and wait for the network to contend. If you haven't got certain failsafes in place you can grind your network to a halt every time that client demands just a few KBs of data...

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Even without knowing that though, I wouldn't feel comfortable using a data account from an ISP that has a separate Telkom FTTH package. That's why I would only consider data from Crystal Web or Afrihost. It also helps that it's been confirmed that data accounts from you guys will run at 100Mbps.

Was there a specific reason Telkom do not offer line only directly to the public, besides the obvious?

They don't even do DSL lines by themselves without a fair bit of effort on your part. It's just how they are - they want you to take out an all-inclusive package, preferably on a long-term contract.

Even if they did, ISPAfrika is cheaper.

What is this effort? All I had to do was order the line, plug it into my modem and activate the line on Telkom's website. Granted I'm in the IT Industry but still, it's not much effort at all. I would think they would at least make it available as an option.

I tried to move my line from Afrihost to Telkom, so that I can cancel it quickly when my fibre installation is complete. After a dozen or so phone calls I gave up and moved the line back to Afrihost. The closest I got to a helpful response was to email a particular person so that they could put me onto a line-only package, but I received no reply and had to act before the line was suspended (it was in the holding pool).

Yeah but your first mistake was moving your line from Telkom to save R50 or R100. I have huge issues trusting ANY ISP to manage my line, because when you have issues they have to "fight" on your behalf to get my line fixed. I'll rather be in charge of that and phone Telkom 15 times a day for progress updates etc...I'll rather not introduce a middleman to save a few bucks!
