How to make a phone call using fiber connection?

Hi guys

I still have a Telkom line, but want to get rid of it and switch to fiber. My wife sometimes uses the Telkom line to phone her mom. Is there a way to make a phone call (to landline or cell phone) using fiber? Perhaps some app or other VOIP service that can use the internet connection to somehow call a phone number.

It looks like Skype and the Hangouts Dialer app can do this, but do any of you have another (perhaps free) way of doing it?

If Telkom is hosting your fibre line, you can transfer your voice line onto it. The monthly voice line rental actually goes up marginally, but at least you can get rid of the old physical copper line if you feel so inclined (or rather, call Telkom to get rid of it).

As for a VOIP solution, I'd probably just go through Skype. Being able to set a local number and have South Africans only pay local rates to call you is a huge feature.

I'm in the same position, I'm intending to get one of these http://www.comx-computers.co.za/GS-...IP-Analogue-Telephone-Adapter-Buy-p-64567.php which has an FXS port (which means you can plug your analogue phones into it, configure it for VOIP and continue using the analogue phones). I'm sure the voice quality won't be as good as a true VOIP phone, but it allows me to use my 4 existing handsets rather than spending close to R9,000 on replacement VOIP handsets.

I'm using my android phone. Using the built in android VoIP functionality to receive calls and installed Zoiper to make calls although that can be made through the android dialer too

I'm using this version http://www.comx-computers.co.za/GS-HT-802-Grandstream-SIP-ATA-1x-LAN-2x-FXS-Buy-p-153116.php as it comes with 2 FXS ports. Currently have 4 traditional landlines running of the one port. For the VOIP side, I use freshphone (http://www.freshphone.co.za).

They told me on the phone that I can only transfer to my fibre line if Telkom Internet is hosting my line.

Not that it matters. If I change up my landline situation it will be by moving to Fresh Phone.

Honestly, I would say get rid of the phone line. With whatsapp calling, Skype, BlueJeans, etc. i find that there are better ways of calling someone that won't take extra money out of my account.

Hi coop, they are currently laying fibre in my area with an expected light up end August. I Have a new Duo of BT DECT phones which I would like to use. Did you go with your initial choice and how's it been for you?
