yea but for someone to do what he wants will cost about 250-300 bucks

so why not spend the extra money and get a cpu

To me it sounds as if the CPU could have overheated, the new LGA heatsink attachments are a bit flimsy and could have not been secured firmly maybe?

well, that i checked right in the beginning, and i couldn't push it in any more :p i would have to buy me some thermal paste as well i think so i can check this perhaps more closely. i have my doubts though

Not everyone has that type of money lying around!
damn right i don't! :D

Yup found that out when I installed my E2160 and found it was hitting 85° C at max load... found out that the heatsink was not level and the spring had poped up... cheap intel coolers ;)

hmmm, thats two votes for overheating, will check that again

but would the PC even switch on if it was overheating? or could that cause it to freeze on the splash screen?

Yeah, it would freeze because you boot from cool.

I ran ORTHOS and Core Temp was at 85C though it was wrong I rebooted and still was at max. After about 3 mins opend case and had a look  ...you know the rest *pull the plug and re-seat the cooler*

But even though it ran at it's max tempreture it still booted up fine everytime!

Might sound a bit strange but check the your Ram is seated correctly bumped my ram out when reseating the CPU cooler and PC would boot but screen would turn off. Though this is a MSI mobo on my old gigabyte it would simply not start :(

it would surprise me if it was heat

i mean even if the cpu is peaking at 85 the splash screen would still move on and you would be able to get into your bios and check the temp before it shut down

i mean glordit got into windows and run coretemp and orthos before he saw 85

surely you get pasted the splash screen

eye_suc, does it just not switch on at all or does it post with a black screen?

well, as mentioned in the original post ( :D ) when i power the box, all seems fine (no funny business) because I get presented with the motherboard splash screen, which in this case is the Gigabyte S-Series splash screen. So NO black screen.

as with other similar splash screens (my old MSI motherboard box also does this) you get options along the bottom like "TAB for POST" and "DEL for BIOS" etc etc, but keyboard does not respond, no amount of button mashing works.

... last night i took apart the whole bloody thing, stuck it all back together again and still nada. same problem, but last night i didn't get a single successful POST, whereas the night before I got one. I'm at wits end.

I'm pretty confident that it would not be the CPU, since the PC powers up and having had a busted CPU before (loooong time ago though) I remember that the PC does ZIPPP. I'm gonna assume that the problem here is the motherboard, since both sticks of RAM cannot be faulty (good stuff I bought apparently) and the GPU works fine in my other, much older, PC. That leaves motherboard and CPU...

Hmmm, it is so pretty sitting in the corner doing nothing. That Centurion case is so sleeeek, must just get another case fan or two...

If it's the motherboard then you have convinced me not to get that Gigabyte board, it was my second choice to the ASUS P5K.

yeah, the P5K was my first choice because I initially thought I would be running some form of crossfire. but after some deep soul searching I was honest with myself about NEVER getting crossfire, so I opted for the slightly cheaper board MINUS crossfire

this gigabyte board however is pretty damn good according to most reports. i think i might have just gotten a dud. most users overclock like crazy with this bad boy.

The fact that it managed to post once indicates that the bios is technically capable of Posting with this CPU...so the problem lies elsewhere. I would:
Double check that the case is not shorting the mobo.
Reseat the CPU & double check the thermal paste.

After that I'd schlep it to incredible corruption and tell them to put another CPU in it and update the bios. IC charges heavy rates though....

yeah, that was my assumption as well since i read about many reports of people booting fine with their new e8400 (never actually found a person using an e8200) using old firmware.

Reseat the CPU & double check the thermal paste.
took the whole thing apart, from scratch, and re-assembled. the thermal paste is currently only the paste thing that comes on the standard box heatsink. i'm hunting for a gob of some good stuff at the moment

Double check that the case is not shorting the mobo.
how can i tell if this is the case (no pun intended there)? assemble outside case and run from there? another gargantuan schlep :p

i will never buy hardware from them again, or use their services. i burned my fingers before. I have consulted some hardware people but it is VERY disheartening talking to people who do this for a living and finding out they know less about PC's than you do. so far nobody has a clue, just waiting for quotes for them to fix it

Yes, outside of case and yes, schlep.

Its the easiest way of getting another cpu into the box imo. Unless you want to bribe your neighbor with a crate of beer.
