Whether you use ADSL, or any mobile network it should work (you have to be a subscribed MTNPlay user @ R15/week or R40/month). If you're using MTN, and you've subscribed it SHOULD be free of charge. The quality isn't the greatest but is watchable.

What you need
1. Mozilla Firefox
2. VLC

What you need do
1. Subscribe (for some reason I am a free subscriber (prepaid), I just subscribe even with no airtime, and when I do load it, it's never gone missing.) To subscribe SMS DSTV1 (R15/week) to 083123686 or DSTV2 (R40/month) to 083123686. Alternatively you can go to the www.mtnplay.co.za website, register, and subscribe http://www.mtnplay.co.za/mtnplay/default.aspx?pageid=aboutmobiletv

2.1 Now because this is a mobile service you can't just go to www.mtnplay.co.za and try and watch, nevermind you need to be on mobile to do that. So you need what we call a user agent, this is where the Firefox requirement comes in, limitless supply of plug-ins. (Or you can just googleChrome's/Opera's/IE's.)

2.2 Head over to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher// Click "+Add to Firefox," restart your browser.

3. Right-click near the top and enable the Menu Bar, click tools, the User Agent feature should have populated, choose Android as your agent.

4. Head over to http://www.mtnplay.co.za/portal/ ignore the message and continue.
You should be on this page

Click a preferred channel.

Note: streaming URL expires, so it's futile to bookmark or to go directly.

5. Start watching.

What speed would you rate it requires to stream?

oh and if I use a MTN sim card, is the data for streaming zero rated? or do you have to pay for the data?

For this bit rate and quality, I reckon only 32KB/s aka 256Kbps is more than adequate.

As mentioned in the OP it should be free. Will test later today and let you know.

It works, but dont play the streaming video through your phones HSDPA, it is very very laggy and you cant watch it that way.

Let it play through vlc then disconnect your phone from the PC and then connect to your ADSL if you have ADSL.

That way it plays without any freezing and i'm on a 384kbps line, so its not bad.

I use Vodacom, masked with a proxy. So don't see how you shound't be able to use ADSL straight.

do you need an mtn sim though?

No. I'm using a Vodacom sim card, just the subscription part that needs an MTN sim. I can PM you my number and pin (mtnplay) seeing that I have free subscription.

Hi there, this looks good. However I live in NZ, and I have no access to a SA MTN number. I have a decent SA proxy and that loads up the site fine. Is there any way that can be bypassed or can someone provide me with an account that works? Also, are some of them live channels as broadcasted on your dstv decoder, is it special mobile versions just for mobile phones?

Now we need somebody to make a XBMC plugin for this and the world will be good again.

I can try give you my credentials, see if that works. You do not need an S.A IP/proxy/tunnel though. The 2 live channels are from SuperSport 1-7, they decide which live events to broadcast on either channel. S if they decide to insert the IPL which plays on SS2, you will get live visuals from SS2.

Khanya,
Please can you give me your credentials to watch DSTV Mobile in UK. Really appreciated. Just as a Test. If it really works in UK then I can think to subscribe for a long period.
