Last night playing MW2 on XBL we had a few gamers in our lobby that were not with MWeb and had bad pings due to re-routing internationally.
Some of their responses to all this... "I am signing up with MWeb".
So it appears MWeb may even gain customers from the cuts. Interesting

I am MWeb and was hosting. I think maybe you weren't in the lobby same time as the discussion when some of the players said they were jumping ship to MWeb.
Of the 12 players in the lobby, 3 were red lining and 1 yellow. The rest of us were either MWeb or an ISP peering with MWeb so were 3 green or full bars.

well whatever Mweb's done... its not good. Torrents max out at 80k on a 4meg - Pathetic! I've seen much better from Mweb. Even HTTP is much slower! As much as I support Mweb's Decision to cut paid peering, how long will we be sitting with these issues? I'm no gamer, but expect a good surfing experience atleast for a 4meg!..... this is honestly running more like a 512k/640k atm... *sigh*

How are they going to get shafted? They were being shafted, and now they are not. How can you justify it costing them more to get data across a data centre floor than it does on 20 000km round trip via London?
Go stand in the corner, put on your "D" cap and really think about it.
I remain unconvinced that MWeb will win this one. MWeb just does not have the user share that Telkom has directly. Also what you are saying shows that maybe MWeb has under estimated the impact of moving the Telkom traffic. Loads of courage, but......
As much as I hate to say it MWeb is focusing on peering when they should be focusing on getting IPC costs down, that is where the real "silver bullet" is. Unless there is another motive, "free" peering would have come along with volume for MWeb over time, this crusade does nothing to deal with the route cause in my view. FIGHT HIGH IPC COSTS !
I see allot of guys complaining about gaming. I'm a gamer myself but I did play some CS and BF2 on SAIX and by the looks of it because there now no local peering between MWEB and Telkom you latency will be insanely high!
But I'm interested to see how the Mweb GameZone compare to SAIX regarding latency etc, and by looking at the forum MWEB looks open to new ideas and suggestions. They are even willing to get updates and patches to their ftp server.
So I'm just wondering does anybody have experience with the GameZone and is it open for other ISP users?

If MWeb wants to maintain and/or grow its user base it has no alternative but to be open to anything except paid peering. If they go back to paid peering, they would have lost the battle, if they don't try to be everything to everybody, they will loose subscribers and ultimately the war.

With peering there is at least an alternative route.
On IPC costs they are dealing with a monopoly. It is quite clear, though, that the size of their IPC pipe, being larger than all other ISPs combined has given them significant bargaining power and economy of scale. But it is not like they can route around Telkom.
Well here's to hoping that the slow dripping sound that MTN and Telkodemonopolies are both hearing from above, is their respective customer bases pissing off to join other ISPs that have a clue.

John MWEB has 170000+ users pushing an average of 12.7 GB per month... 3.7 GB more than Telkoms' largest available ADSL account. Plus they are owned by Naspers, South Africa's largest media conglomerate. You need to wrap your head around this, MWEB are not the little guys in this! Naspers as of yesterday is a R149 Billion company while Telkom is only valued at R18 billion.
BTW there are only about 650000 ADSL customers country wide at last count so MWEB has just over 25% market share by subscriber numbers and probably 50%+ share by data volume.

Not necessarily, but it does increase the likelihood of healthier competition. And competition leads to better quality and lower prices.
As for Mweb uncapped, improved bandwidth provisioning, on-net value-added services and reduced shaping would probably take precedence over price cuts.

If I'm not mistaken 'affect' is usually a verb and 'effect' a noun. So "How will MWEB's peering link cuts affect you?" (influence) or "What effect(s) will MWEB's peering link cuts have on you?" (result) would both be correct...This is rather OT though
