Is it possible for software to calculate incorrect data usage ?

And in this incorrect data usage , being incorrectly billed by Vodacom ?

Am on a PAYG HSDPA package and still experiencing extremely fast usage.

All programs (Win XP , NIS ) set on notify of updates - no automatic downloads.

PC is not infected by any malicous software .

On GPRS at moment (no HSDPA where I'm at) - accordingly have been billed for using 30 MB in two days (which is not possible due to only being at most 1 hour online in the 2 days)

Howzit people!

RompelStompel ... interesting question you've got there .... make sure that you've got programs like "Spybot" and "AdAware" running, to check for spyware etc on your PC ...
I had spyware "hidden" on my PC, that munched up 3 - 4k /sec everytime I logged on ...
That would've caused about 10Mb of data within 1 hour!
After running Spybot and AdAware, they were quickly removed, and since then, I've got a "QUIET" link, when I'm not browsing or doing anything specific
Running "Zone Alarm" firewall also makes the connection MUCH more safer. (interesting to see how many PC's on the 3G network, tries to connect to my PC on port 445 ! not good at all!)...

For anyone else reading this ...I've got a similar kind of question ....
When I'm connected, my VMC, Net Limiter, and right clicking on the "connection" icon in Wndows, all show me 3 different data usage counts!??
So witch one must I believe??

The VMC software on the computer does not determine the amount that gets billed - the traffic is calculated on Vodacom's side and subtracted from your account.
If the traffic in the VMC matches up to what has been billed, then you could probably assume that you have hidden apps running on your PC and that there isnt a billing problem.
I think that most likely you (or spyware) have used more bandwidth than you think.

So is Windows Defender a cr@p piece of software despite being kept on date with regards to defs released by Microsoft ?

Have been running Defender (with latest defs) - still does not pick up any malicous apps.

Will try and see what Spybot picks up (did use Spybot when I first encountered this problem - no nasties found).

Checking on 3G usage

My apologies if this is a stupid question...

I am trying to find a link were I can check my usage on my 3g HSPDA contract. The Vodacom4me website only shows how much of my bolt on bundle has been used. It does not show how much I have gone over the bundle.

Does anyone know if this is possible? I have been holding for more than 10mins for 082 155....with no luck.

vodacom will convince you that the software is inaccurate

There is no way to check your total usage at the moment. V3G has requested this enhancement, but #@$!@#$ knows when they will actually get round to doing it. It seems a bit stupid that nobody there has ever thought about doing it!

NetLimiter shows I used 28.64 + 5.13 = 33.77 Mb.

Are you sure about that? That's almost exactly double.

Yes, I am sure about it. Even more than I would be later in the month .. because I do sometimes put my HSDPA card into another laptop, and then NetLimiter will off course not show that usage on my everyday use laptop. All I did online since the 1st was a bit of browsing, internet banking, a few emails etc.

AND: I did download a few MegaBytes worth, but that was on my pre-paid sim card. So NetLimiter should even have included that usage, amd VodaCom4Me excluded it on my HSDPA contract.

I think the the difference the one is in bits and the other one in bytes. Remember there is 8 bits in a byte.

Incorrect Data Usage?

My wife has an Option 3G/HSDPA card on a 1Gb monthly contract with Vodacom. She almost never uses 1 Gb and on the last day of the month, I do some personal downloading to get to the 1Gb limit.

Today, when I checked the USAGE on the Vodafone dashboard, it gives me 8.47Gb for the month of October. Surely this cannot be correct. We are using a laptop, but WLAN is switched off. Sure Windows Update is enabled, but 8.47GB usage in 3 weeks?

Any comments?

Forget about what the VMC s/w says, what does vodacom4me.co.za say the data transfer usage is for October?
