Thought I'll post this in case anyone else comes across the same problem.
I've had the same issue with 2 x N40L units - the 1st was about 6 months old and the other was brand new out of the box.
On booting up the HP logo stays RED and doesn't even get to the BIOS screen. I initially thought the problem was my power supply. I eventually figured out its the BIOS battery that was flat (the machines been switched off for a few weeks)
After replacing it boots without any issues. Its worth a try especially since the replacement batteries are so cheap.
