HP Microserver

I need to add some more RAM
Running OMV with SSD & still have low profile card from when I used it for Kodi.
Got UniFi, Shinobi (still testing), Jellyfin, Smokeping (needs a re-install) & Sickrage
Need to get two or three more 4TB drives then it's complete

If you're looking for non-ECC RAM I think I have a few sticks laying around that you can have. How much do you need?

Seems like SSD lost power.
So took time to check cables & reseat ram, now picks up both 2GB sticks.
4GB should be enough or what u think?

With regard to Unifi, does your traffic stats work?

If your memory usage is good then it should be fine.

I don't know about your usecase but with 15 containers running on top of OMV, I'm sitting at a constant 2.75GB RAM used. I have 8GB in total, so enough overhead to run quite a few more. I'll likely run out of CPU power before I reach the limitations of the memory capacity.

When you say traffic stats what do you mean? I don't have a USG, only one AP and an Edgerouter, so I don't have DPI and all that fancy stuff. I can see basic client info like up/downlink and total GB transferred per session but that's about all

OK, also just gave EdgeSwitch 8 POE powers AP's & cameras.
Still getting my head around Shinobi

What a great thread. Hope the OP got some life juiced into the microserver.

I just recently dug two fried N40l's out of storage - merged them to get one working N40L. Super happy to have at least one back. Unfortunately only 4gb RAM for now. Will upgrade soon.

Few questions for you guys on the N40L, specifically:
  1. We sure now the N40L can do ECC and Non-ECC?
  2. Do you need ECC for OpenZFS? Someone recommended openZFS and a zpool to me today but I understand open ZFS is ram hungry and it requires ECC. Can anyone confirm?
  3. Do you need bios mod for using optical drive Sata port to boot?
  4. Do you need bios mod for 16GB RAM?
  5. If you go 16GB RAM, is that only non-ECC or either?
  6. Does the n40L still have a 2 Tb drive limit per bay or does bios mod /upgrade lift that as well?

I'm also looking to build home server with downloader (Transmission or something), some form of media player that can stream local content to client devices (phones and miBox), something to manage storage (OMV or FN) and added ability to do some virtualization (VM's) - still have to research proxmox, qemu and whatever else there is.

Thanks!

I mean the following, I have the server connected to my TV downstairs, I can barely access things, its so damn slow, so the TV is connected direct to the server. If I want to watch anything on that TV its pointless, takes too long, so I need a media player but what a mission

  3. Do you need bios mod for using optical drive Sata port to boot? Yes
  4. Do you need bios mod for 16GB RAM? Unsure about this one. I run 8GB on mine

  6. Does the n40L still have a 2 Tb drive limit per bay or does bios mod /upgrade lift that as well? Up to 12TB has been tested

Added some answers in bold, and the rest you should find here: https://n40l.fandom.com/wiki/HP_MicroServer_N40L_Wiki

Works fine as a file server for me. Definitely not for using while connected to a monitor but I've watched 1080p movies from there without a hitch using Plex

Never heard of Point 6.

Running an N36L with hard drives larger than that since it existed and before doing any BIOS.

Thanks all, I applied the bios MOD last night and am now booting Ubuntu off a SSD on the optical drive SATA port.

Will upgrade memory and sort out drives in due course - memory hopefully in coming days.

Thanks again

These little boxes are remarkably resilient, provided you don't need a powerful display or anything.

I find these servers very slow, they are terrible to try and use on a monitor or screen / TV, fine as a server but thats it
Mine has run for about 10 years. RAM was an issue and expensive as it's Non-ECC and I finally put some in that I'd found.
I am replacing this with a Micro PC. Costs almost as much to put in SSDs, and it has recently started to eject the USB WiFi dongle for no reason necessitating a restart.
For streaming and watching other movies/series off it there were no issues as I'd had a GeForce card installed (GTX630 I think it was).
But, with everything, it's time for a replacement so my Micro PC will be arriving in the next couple of days from Amazon.

Which Micro PC are you purchasing ? Also noted that Intel NUCs go pretty cheaply on eBay

Beelink GK35 Mini PC (8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel HD Graphics 500 with 4K display - I don't have a TV that can do 4K, Intel Celeron Apollo Lake J3455) and an additional 2TB 2.5" HDD to install into it.

Cost me R4500

I looked at the NUC, but they're tremendously expensive. Barebones for the most part too in which case your costs increase astronomically and it's then worthwhile to look at a proper PC which I wasn't interested in doing.

I priced the same hardware on Takealot and it was cheaper for me to ship the hardware from Amazon instead by a decent amount of money.
