Most ATI 5450's and 6450's are all passive and use a lot less power. Meaning they make less heat and are quieter. Plus i have found it easier to get a half height ATI card with the right brackets.

I'm an ATI fanboi but I need nVidia because of the driver issues talked about in this thread. I want to run in 1080p.

I'm sure someone said the MSI GT520 works.

As previously posted. There is a fix to get the ATI cards working.

Okay colleague of mine got his working. 1080p running perfectly on a 5450 in Linux/XBMC as I'm typing this.

I had this problem too (using Ubuntu 11.04 + XBMC with 5450). I solved it by adding the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

After this 1080p movies playback flawlessly (no dropped frames, +-15% CPU usage)

- The GT520 kicks the ati 5450 in the ass
- nVidia is better for XBMC

Yes they might have a "fix" for the ati cards, but the gt520 is better anyway, isn't it?

Is it a Mega Gaming PC, or a HTPC? Lol.

The HD5450 is the best suited card for the HP MS as a HTPC due to it having the lowest power usage (load and idle). Remember, you are not adding your own beefy power supply, you are using the built-in PSU which is very small.

The HD6450 (also silent) has about twice the amount of stream processors, and also works. Uses more power though. Again, unnecessary for a HTPC.

Not sure that has anything related to what most peoples goal of buying this server is. ;).
Both play 1080p content fine. The ATI cards just does it while being quieter and using less power.

I just posted the benchies as you said i'm incorrect about the Gt520 being a faster card.

surely that card doesn't make THAT much of a noise though?
I have a 4870X2 and it's pretty quiet for idle or video processing imo....

I know :p. But we are not gaming here :D. Not sure how much noise it would make. But it would make more noise than the 4870x2 since its a smaller fan and has to spin fater to move the air. Plus i must just be more anal about sound as i had the get rid of the stock 4870x2 cooler on my card APAP as the noise was killing me

Maybe it'll fit in an Antec Fusion HTPC? You could then also add a Quad Core CPU.

:D

That Antec is crap...I love the look and design of the Silverstone LC13B-E...but it's like R3000 just for the case :wtf:

I'm not saying I want a gaming Rig, i'm just saying the GT520 has good performance over the 5450, and I intend on getting mame games to run on it in XBMC.

It's not about building the best perfomance Gaming system, but if you can get a better card for around the same money, why not?

Then get the HD6450?

Are you SURE I won't have problems with XBMC running @ 1080p?
I might use
- Linux/Ubuntu + XBMC <- not likely though
- XBMC Live
- OpenELEC
- or even windows 7 + different Media Centres connected to a front-end I code myself. (Mame, XBMC, Boxee, etc) <- not likely though

I really don't wanna fiddle too much, I'm a linux and XBMC n00b.

Keeper, someone mentioned earlier that MAME is heavily dependent on the CPU and that the one in the Microserver might not be good enough for some of the higher end MAME games. It does not offload to the GPU at all.

I'm also a Linux noob. If according to other posters the HD5450 is working, then I'm sure there will be a fix for the HD6450 too.

I am a huge Linux noob :p. I plan on running Ubuntu 11.04. Install flexraid and then XBMC. No idea if any of it will work but its nothing Google cannot help with :p.

It does use DirectX for some of the rendering afaik, like Stretching and interlacing.
