HP ProLiant MicroServer

I does use DirectX for some of the rendering, like Stretching and interlacing.

Ah cool. Well if you can wait till the end of next week i can let you know how things go with how i plan on running it. Or you can get it at the same time and we both struggle together :p.

i'll probably be ordering mine next week or something...as a n00b I want to explore all possible builds before throwing 2K into it (thats excluding drives)

i'm thinking about designing something cool and cutting a vinyl mask for spraying, to make it funky and unique. (like boxee box)
Bad Idea? :p

I dont understand what that has to do with passive cards.... those are the fanless ones right?
I thought one with a fan would be better?

I keep getting mixed answers about the gfx card - please tell me which GT520 card I should get that works?
(this is my current choice)

I got the MSI in my server and its working with ubuntu, it has the dual low profile brackets as well

I had this problem too (using Ubuntu 11.04 + XBMC with 5450). I solved it by adding the following to /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Code:
Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

After this 1080p movies playback flawlessly (no dropped frames, +-15% CPU usage)

Only saw this now. Will definitely try this when I get home (if the wife lets me :)).

I'm also a Linux noob. If according to other posters the HD5450 is working, then I'm sure there will be a fix for the HD6450 too.

FYI XBMCFreakv2 contains a lot of the ATi fixes built in, it's also built on Ubuntu 11.04.

How easy is it to connect my Pc to the HP though, to transfer files to it? (via the GB Network)

PC is windows 7 and HP will be linux/ubuntu (or something)

also can I add a wifi card and stream to an iPad?

Are you SURE I won't have problems with XBMC running @ 1080p?
I might use
- Linux/Ubuntu + XBMC <- not likely though
- XBMC Live
- OpenELEC
- or even windows 7 + different Media Centres connected to a front-end I code myself. (Mame, XBMC, Boxee, etc) <- not likely though

I really don't wanna fiddle too much, I'm a linux and XBMC n00b.

Keeper, you are now deep in the throes of what I call 'Analysis Paralysis'.

Just buy the **** and you'll immediately feel better. :)

I manually installed the AMD/Ati drivers for my HD5450 on Ubuntu as well as the the catalysthacks hardware acceleration packages. Followed the guide here: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Natty_Installation_Guide. I also added the above code to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

The video play back in XBMC is now perfect but still had to enable the Catalyst driver tearing feature though.

My CPU usage has now gone down to about 60-80% total (from 50% on each core/100%total). However this is not low enough. Still need to get a 1080p to do a proper test but it is working for now.

Anything else I should try? The GPU is obviously not being utilized completely.

You will need to configure samba for windows file sharing

There's an XBMC app for iPad/Phone, has to be jail broken though

Hehe, no I will, soon :)

I'm just new to Media Players, NAS, Linux & XBMC, and now apparently "Samba" :erm:

I'm not really an impulsive buyer, and as I'm a n00b at this I wanna wrap my head around the whole Setup before spending 2K on it (and that doesn't include proper drives yet)

But I think I'll be okay now... :D

well I am happy with the little sucker and streaming media through my WDTV Live is a breeze.

just connect it to main network to update drives and voila. (just waiting for extra NIC to connect both at same time).

:D
Ok, NAS setup!
5x2Tb Samsungs + HP microserver (7.15Tb usagble)
Ubuntu Linux Server
zfs-fuse (zraid)
webmin (for admin & samba setup)
Busy copying 3Tb of stuff to it.

FYI Using ext4? There is a command for non OS drives to get some of those lost gigs back

I just got mine!!!
hope i will have a chance to pick up a 2TB drive this afternoon so i can start playing with it this weekend!
:-)

i am gonna go with the Seagate green because the specs are better then the samsung.

yep, not even sure if the motherboard supports SATA3?

They do not. But you could buy a pci sata3 card and plug it into that.
