HP ProLiant MicroServer

Interesting. Wonder if it can be made to work on openelec.

That I wouldn't know; I had it running first on Mint and then vanilla Ubuntu until the day I hooked up the other channels on the receiver after our move... Stereo's only good enough when you only have 2 speakers connected. :D

I haven't even ever seen OpenELEC running.

They might work, but not together. The microserver only has 1 full-length expansion slot which you'll want to stick a graphics card into. The other slot is a 4x PCI-e slot (I think that's what they're called) so you'll need the Xonar DSX or DGX and not the DS or DG. Also keep in mind that you'll want cards which will fit in low profile spaces.

The microserver does actually have an onboard sound card, just no physical connections. If you run HDMI it will also carry the onboard card's audio. Unfortunately my rather unsophisticated receiver only has coax and optical digital audio inputs, which is why I have a DSX. According to reviews the DGX sounds a bit more boomy - more gaming oriented, supposedly - which is why I went DSX. To my non-audiophile ears it sounds a bit of alright.

This is a massive thread so excuse me if this has been asked before, but, what is the cheapest and best bang for buck gtaphics card with HDMI out for the N45L? I only want to pipe PLEX playback to a tv....

I'm having no joy with my Win 7 installation so will be sticking with OpenELEC until further notice.

It is not the Win 7 itself. But XBMC doesn't want to open on Win 7. Says something like "Cannot open GUI". I read it is my graphics card drivers that need updating but the AC Ryan Wireless Dongle does not work on Windows either so I cannot update the drivers. (Don't know what I'm doing wrong).

I also found out that I know absolute farkall about networks.... :o:( So much still to learn.

Otherwise I am enjoying it a lot. Starting to play around with the add-ons later today.

BTW, anyone had any joy getting Win8.1 to work? Two of my N40Ls just won't upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1. Apparently it's (absence of) the network driver, so the onboard nw has to be disabled in two places in BIOS and an alternative NIC used.

Am I correct in assuming that a video card with HDMI out will pipe video AND audio along the HDMI cable, negating the need for a sound card?

I would just get a Samsung SMART Bluray player and install the NETFLIX app. It works very well and they are relatively cheap.

Thx, doesn't seem the Openelec microserver provides a real solution so its either this or a Roku.
