I have a D-Link wireless N dongle in the internal USB slot.

Keeper, if money isn't an issue for you, then yes an Antec Fusion with kit will be a better HTPC....

But for value for money you can't beat the MicroServer.... for slightly more than the cost of the Antec Case you can have a fully working HTPC.
 
if you really are more after the aesthetics of the case and features built into it, and you have the money for something like it, then by all means.

we are providing you with a 'cost effective' method of doing what you want to do, and I will go as far as to say that some1 actually played BC2 on this thing (mind you it was probably lowest gfx settings and took quite a while to load).

we're working on roughly: R1200 for ms, R700 for 2TB and about R700 for gfx for a quick setup. (yes know prices can be cheaper, these are 'rough high' estimates)

not to mention besides cost effective, but it also has expandability if you are looking for mainly NAS usage.
hell even for HTPC it has expandability, but might not have everything you would want.
 
A few points on above posts:

- GT220 power requirements to high for the HP MS.

- MSI GT520 comes with two seperate LP brackets, so you don't need to install the VGA half, if you don't feel like it.

- A number of iPhone/iPAD/Android remote controls. Most work fine. But a proper MCE IR Remote is essential.

- To get a fully functional XBMC setup on the HP MS, you really only need the GPU. And if it'll make you feel better, an extra Gig of RAM. I've even removed the hard drive from mine and just boot of a flash.
 
Is everyone here using the stock standard XBMC Live 10.1?

Ok but if you buy an IR Remote now, where do you put the Receiver? Is it possible to mod it into the HP itself somehow?

Or are there nice remotes that dont use Infra Red? (Like Blutooth or something, where the receiver is a small USB that can be hidden)


It just seems like it's gonna be ugly with the receiver laying around or on top of the HP MicroServer


I actually want the Harmony 650 but i'm not sure if it will work with xbmc either

Mostly.

If you use and older NVidia card, use XBMCLive.

if you use a newer card, not yet supported by the 'Live built, try openelec. (I use it on the GT520, for example).

If you love to fiddle run XBMC on top of Linux.

If you have no imagination and/or are in accounting, run XBMC on Windows.

What could work is to replace the CD-drive blank plate with a dark perspex one and put the receiver behind that. I probably would've done that 10 years ago. Now I just hide it somewhere where it's not noticed. ;)

thats pretty smart man
(then I can perhaps fit a 5th drive in there right?)

So All I need is:

-HP ProLiant MicroServer
-2GB Cheap Kingston Value RAM
-Hauppauge Remote Control for MCE (Just for the receiver really)
-Logitech Harmony 650
-ASUS LP GT520 with LP Bracket
-2TB Drives (Is 5900RPM Okay for HD Content?)
