HP ProLiant MicroServer

NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

FTGH : I have an N36 (bought off of BoB) that died during a surge. I'm not gonna bother trying to fix the it since I've bought a replacement N40 which is up and running.

PM me if you want it for spares, learning, target practice, whatever. If not taken by end Feb it goes in the bin.

I'm in JHB, Randpark Ridge.

sooooo... I picked up my N40L earlier... At long last.

Probably not going to use it till the weekend though, since I need to drop a lan cable to where it is going to stand. Just couldn't justify buying a wireless adapter just to use for a couple of days. Instead I will practice some patience.

If I could use a normal PCI card in the second slot on the board it may still be up tonight... :erm:

I use the WNA3100 wireless USB adapters on all my computers. Works like a charm.

When I picked up the unit, I actually had that exact adapter in my hand. Was very tempted to get it. Problem is it would literally be just to have the PC on the network for the next few days. Felt like too much of a waste.

Primary reason why mine is still in storage and hasn't found it's way to the tech-cemetery... Damn thing weighs between 30-40kg's IIRC.

Well, the weight the fact that I just don't have the heart to send it anywhere unless it's a good home for it.

Some random pics I found online of the PE2600/compoents:

The first pic is nice.
The second pic had me interested. Two front accessible PSUs and six HDDs. Very Nice.
The third pic had me curious. Is that an ISA slot between the PCI slots and the chip holders? LOL! And what's that lonely ram slot doing away from all it's friends?

Servers are cool. Not the normal Micro ATX stuff I've seen a thousand times.

Thanks for the pics.

So my Hp is finally hooked up to the Internet. What security are you guys running for openelec? Currently LAN cable to router.

No ports forwarded from the router to the openelec box so not worried.

I have 5 computers in the house all running the same adapter. Just a bit more piece of mind regarding lightning strikes.

so sickbeard and sabnzbd is talking on the openelec box. but sabnzbd loads the nzb's but just idles. no downloading taking place. sabnzbd is downloading full speed on the laptop though.

any suggestions?

Make sure your laptop ain't using up all your allowed download connections.
Happened to me this weekend when installing on my new Xeon box.

Yep - 6x 300GB 10k RPM SCSI drives. Had it setup in two volumes, one in RAID1 for OS/APPS and the remaining drives in RAID5 for data. You should hear when they all spin up...used to get goosebumps everytime lol. All the components are hot-swappable as well so if you get bored one day you can just yank out one of the PSU's and whatch the Dell logo/indicator light change from blue to orange. And no one is any the wiser...

I actually really don't remember what that black slot was - I don't think it was an ISA though, it miiiiight have been for a management module. But to be entirely honest, I haven't cracked the thing open in about 3 years. So for all I know, that is where the coffee machine is meant to be plugged in :erm:

Rogue RAM had something to do with the RAID controller IIRC, I never could get a solid explanation on what it was for.

Here is a link to the spec sheet if you feel like checking out the details: http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/products/pedge/2600.pdf

Luckily we don't really get lightning here. Or not often anyway.

At the moment we are fully wireless as well. The router literally has power and telephone cables plugged in at the moment. I just want a bit more zoom-zoom on the "backbone", especially since I plan on streaming to other rooms too. The wireless at the moment just doesn't like HD content that much. If it was just for connection to the net and the occasional file, I would have gone wireless again. Maybe when AC becomes a bit more mainstream I will go that route again.

Hi guys,

I'm using a N40L and running Debian Squeeze.

I'm getting really crappy speeds to the ESATA port - i've already done the BIOS hack for it.

Any ideas? Please help me troubleshoot! Drive in question is a 2TB Seagate 7200rpm with NTFS partition.

time dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/54AABE61AABE3F74/test.dbf bs=8k count=1048576
^C516330+0 records in
516330+0 records out
4229775360 bytes (4.2 GB) copied, 116.129 s, 36.4 MB/s

Thanks,
J

I think it depends on the MKV.. For example "Jeff who lives at home" thats is a 1080P always stutters... Even with everything enabled... Weird really

Found the culprit to be NTFS.

I simply formatted the drive to EXT4.

SAME DRIVE FOR BOTH TESTS:
EXT4 WRITE TEST: 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 12.6582 s, 170 MB/s
NTFS WRITE TEST: 2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 72.9564 s, 29.4 MB/s
can you say WTF?

Linux doesn't play nicely with NTFS.

Hardware repair question

Apologies if this has been asked -- and -- answered already ( I did do a search within the thread -- but it is longer than that other crazy one :) )

I have been given three of these N40L -- looks like // However some sort of power damage which I have to try and find and fix.
Original HDD and memory removed -- but that is not too great a problem.

Have striped them down and checked the PSU's ( which are working )
However no luck with the MB's
One lights up and when you switch on , the fan turns and the other stuff lights up , but NO POST
The others are just dead.
I have checked carefully with a magnifying glass and can see no burnt tracks or other visible damage
Will have them checked out by an electronics fundi.

In the mean time
Is it worthwhile to try and change the MB ? ( get a new one )
Is it possible to get re-furb / re-built MB's ?
How expensive are they ?
Is there any other brand of MB that will fit in this case ?

Looks like an interesting machine so I would like to try and persevere ( NO bucks for new stuff  )

Appreciate your suggestions.
