HSDPA Tower listings

But I must say, I like the Google idea.....

V3G .... it was a while ago, last year in fact, that I, and some others, mooted the potential benefits of using Google Earth.

Does your quoted comment suggest that, since then, no further thought was given by VC to GE as a tool to benefit themselves and their customers? And that presently it is still merely at the "I like the Google idea" stage of the process to get it going?

I can neither confirm, nor deny, the potential us of GE in internal- or customer-facing applications.

Vc -- Ge

Apart from being totally off topic, you are incorrect, VC|Vodacom is not trying to "buy out" MTN, I suspect you are confusing yourself with Vodafone which is not the same as Vodacom, and AFAIK any such buying into MTN by Vodafone would exclude MTN South Africa.

Thank you for the correction. I do tend to throw my toys around at times. Please be patient and tolerant -- it makes for good citizenship.

The tellecommunications world is so fascinating.

Thank you

I Have searched for some info on Vodacom 3g or HSUPA tower locations and came up with this forum, and questions asked about the same problems I am having, but no answers to my problems.
I live in an area where the GPRS coverage is good. The 3g marginal. I have been a subscriber for 4 years now. Computers get upgraded (now I run a MacBook and an iMac, no more windows rubbish cluttering my life). On my last upgrade I bought an external antennae and instantly received a good 3g signal and for about 6 or 8 months everything was fine. Suddenly the signal deteriorated, the signal dropped and I became frustrated. I had changed nothing, except make sure I have the latest software for my modem. After many frustrating calls to Vodacom and promises of help, none materialised, so I hopped on the roof to play with the antennae. I pointed it in anther direction and voila! I had even better performance than before. Again, all goes well for the next 10 months or so, suddenly around December 2009 the signal deteriorates, it drops the 3g signal unpredictably, to the point where I now very occasionally get 3g signal unless I force 3g only. In this case it eventually will get a signal and it is not reliable and the performance is poor. I have checked all the basics and want to find some way of locating the towers in my area on a map and with a process of trial and error, see if I cannot improve the situation.

My information is as follows:-

GREETINGS, vodacom3g. maybe we need to talk off line. Vodacom's 3G/HSDPA coverage is "sparse"(understatement) in many areas and thus the cells breathe badly and continuously. An outside aerial needs to be directed correctly , and the closest transmitter is not necessarily the best.So to get LOS properly knowledge of the "next closest HSDPA towers" and the direction from my receiver is critical. Was your response (Why would you need a list) really serious and technically competant? A list of the current HSDPA towers and their "Google earth" co-ordinates and a listing of the future HSDPA towers, their co-ordinates and when they are coming on line would be superb as well as the present listing.

I have also requested this before ie a .kml file for Google earth because I needed to point my external antenna in the right direction. Alas nobody could assist me with this.

It would have been so beautiful to have this because then I could aim the antenna straight to the tower without having to physically see the tower. At the moment one just have to more or less guess the location of the tower and also you can't for instance test a neighboring tower to see if you get a more effective(not necessarily stronger) signal.
