HTC DESIRE HD

Finally got mine yesterday afternoon. One word ... freaking awesome (ok, that's 2 words - sorry)

My wife wanted the iPhone, which I obliged by getting it for her (gotta keep the lil' lady happy, you know). She received hers and I placed my order for my Desire HD on the same day. In the week that she's had it, I've had a good look and I must be honest, I was starting to worry about my choice. The iPhone is a really polished piece of kit, and I couldn't see how anything would top it.

That was, of course, until my DHD arrived. Man, am I happy I didn't buckle and go for the iPhone (one was available for me, and I could have had it the same day as my wife's). It's quite a bit easier to use that the iPhone. It's fast, simple, very responsive. Plug the thing in with the USB cable, connect the the SD card, install the HTC Sync software (supplied on the phone's SD card), and I'm good - no fuss. Copy music to the phone, some movies ... no prob.

Given the hassles I had getting my wife's iPhone working with iTunes and synching (one-way) of libraries to get music etc on it, I thought the ease of interaction between the DHD was laughably simple, to the point that I thought "No, it can't be that easy"

I logged on with my Google account to get my gMail, and every google module I've ever used is now also configured with the same settings on my phone. My gTalk contacts are there, my Google maps bookmarks and maps are there, my rss feeds are there - quite simply mindblowing.

Setup was simple as pointed out by kingrob, although it wouldn't communicate nicely with my old iMate Jamin (I guess there are still SOME limits). Only complaint I have is the battery cover which had me swearing a little bit.

Battery is going to be an issue, not a big one, but an issue nevertheless. Leave it alone and use it occasionally for one or 2 things, and it seems to hold out nicely. Start fiddling heavily, and you can actually see the battery indicator drop. To be honest though, if the only thing I have to worry about is the battery needing to be charged once a day, them I'm more than happy.

This is my first Android phone, and while a lot of the things I've been raving about may seem like old hat to most of you, I'm just so impressed that I've finally found the phone that I've been wanting for years ... something with a large screen (check) that can keep my in touch wherever I go (check) and can provide seemless interfacing with my PC (check).

Very happy little panda here!

that's good to read. I've been using an iphone 4 for about a week now, and i must admit, it's very, very good. I was starting to wonder whether i made a mistake. the speed and the screen on this thing is fantastic, and once it's jailbroken and tweaked, it's actually not as closed as i thought it would be. This DHD has a lot to live up to. Now it must just pitch up before our offices close on friday.

and HTCsense is a big a$$ FAIL!!! site is down for maint and no confirmation when it will be up as per htc support

How do I configure the wifi network?
:)
Shads, does our phone have a built in FM transmitter?
(I use it to stream music in my car with my current Nokia)

Also how is the "modified" google maps on the DHD?
On my Nokia I prefer Ovi maps to the standard Google Maps.
Is the DHD maps better than Ovi?

... It's new. It was working in its entirety for a couple of days after I loaded the HD ROM on my Desire. A few teething problems are to be expected. The functionality I saw whilst it was operational was pretty impressive though.

If you have already created an account on HTCSense, you can just login via your phone & have access to most of the downloads on the site.

I must still get the extra bits (when your phone is lost, remote wipe, etc) sorted.

No, the phone doesn't have a FM Transmitter, only Stereo FM radio.

I just purchased the premium navigation suite (R277 for lifetime licence) and it's pretty good. Tested it with two locations in Cape Town & took me straight to the front door each time. Finally I have full navigation on my mobile! Yay!

From what I've read / seen so far, no it doesn't have an FM Transmitter, but then again, I don't need it in my car. I also use a Garmin Navigator, so haven't tried using the maps yet, but I'll try it this afternoon. there's so much to this phone - need a week off from work! :)

Hi
Where did you get that from? The Premium navigation suite? Is it as good as Garmin? Does it have the latest maps? Thanks!

Maps are current. POI database sucks. Interface is meh.

Yeah, the points of interest is non-existing, but I'm sure that can also be fixed with an update.

The navigation is cool and works really well. The nice thing about it (and why I wanted it in the first place) is that it doesn't use GPRS/HSDPA data. Very useful when you're in a place without good reception.

100% - I am also hopeful that the POIs get updated and R277 for navigation really isn't expensive. That being said, if rumour is to be believed GoogleMaps 5 will include local caching of map data & it's going to hit soon...
