HTC DESIRE HD

Get a different make. If you must go the Android route, go for SE or Motorola.

I don't really think that's an option I'm afraid. And honestly apart from not being able to make calls, I love the phone :)

I know others have had fantastic experiences with their DHD, I just want the same thing :)

Then you stuck. A not-so-smart smartphone. Hmmm.
I had an HTC Hero, that couldn't make calls, nor receive. Turned out to be the antenna chip (or whatever). HTC quoted me R2976.18 to fix it.
So I cut my losses, vowed never to get another HTC EVER, and got a Nokia. Smart choice for me.

Anyway, enjoy the toy.
Maybe you can go and hack the life out of it, just to say you can, and then hack it again.

Seriously, take it back. Again.

So I've just got a replacement HTC Desire HD because the first one, 90% or the time, couldn't make or receive calls. Also data often didn't work either.

Charge the new one up, make a couple calls. Back to the exact same issue. Also somehow this "brand new" phone knew what my wireless network key was. Is that something that get's backed up on your Google account, or is that suspicious?

I know that it's not a network problem because my old HTC Magic works fine in the same area, with the same sim card.

Is anyone else having the same problem? Or can suggest what I should do?

I've had absolutely zero problem with the GSM radio, works a lot better than my colleagues SE. And you're not going to get the same level of software support from SE (some of their phones are still stuck on 1.8!) or Motorola. The 2.3 update might be out soon in this country, but other than that I can't tell you what to do.

Perhaps you need a new SIM (certain phones don't love certain SIMs, but that is very very rare); it's a consideration since this has affected more than one phone.

Sorry you had a bad time with the Hero, it wasn't the best phone. However, as an ex-SE fanboi, I can say the Desire HD is nothing short of the best phone I have every owned. It is absolutely superb.

Yeah the sim was my thought as well. I am just really fed up with the whole process.

Any thoughts on the Galaxy?

Ok, well I'm off to do a sim swap. I'll try that over the weekend. Failing that, they said they'll have another one for me by Tuesday. Let's hope that's true!

I don't think people see this part. Dude there is no way in hell this should happen. You can probably bet 100% this is the exact same phone with the same problem. My suggestion is to go confront them at the shop, and swap it out.

Is it possible to buy apps from the market somehow? I want Locale... but can't buy it :(

Google "Market Enabler" sadly you will have to root your device, lucky I have 2 Android devices so my desire is rooted, buy software on that back up to PC restore to Desire HD

 So I need to loose my warranty to buy stuff as opposed to just pirate it... well done Google.

Erm thats not Googles falure, its actually our government/fpb and our service providers.

This is exactly my problem with Android.
We don't get to experience it in all it's glory, by default.
One has to hack to do this, hack to do that, hack, hack, hack.

It ticked me off to no end.

Is there no other solution for xrapidx?

Don't have to hack to do anything... its just that 9 times out of 10 its the simpler option
You can always contact the developers directly and get it from them or look for alternative markets that can sell you the software or option 3 that I am not going to mention ;)

Temproot it. It'll be rooted until you reboot. There really is no way they'll be able to tell you rooted.

But that's the issue!!!!!

No-one should have to make any modifications to get something to work like it aught to!!!
If you have android market then let it be a market!!!! Why call it a market if you can't purchase anything?

Why?

Why would anyone want to go a different route other than HTC at this current time in SA? Until we get the Atrix or something comparable the DHD is THE best Android phone on the market. Fact!

Substantiate. Please.
Quoting specifications won't help. Detailed analysis will be required.

HTC has iffy support in SA, whereas Samsung has much better. Not too sure about SE.
Like I said. I vow to NEVER own another HTC again. I gave them a shot, benefit of the doubt - and got burned.
Screw HTC. It doesn't matter how good the hardware is (which itself isn't infallible), but if your after sales is lacking, you have no business being in business.

iDenTiTy, go and troll somewhere else. You had a HTC with Windows Mobile on it & now you rate all HTC phones as if they're still in the Windows Mobile 6.0 days.

It's like you had a bad experience with Windows 3.1 and now you've decided that Windows 7 will be the same.

Grow up.

There is absolutely nothing that beats the Desire HD right now.

And if something comes along that steals the crown, it will be another HTC. My money is on the Evo 3D. ;)
