HTC DESIRE HD

OK I SEMI FIXED THIS SUCKER! Battery out. Plug in charger, plug battery in whilst on charger. SUCCESS POWER LED. Switch on. Pray. Still working. Lets hope it stays on. I'm guessing I need to flash this sucker soon!

Anyone else had this. To the world this phone was dead - I couldn't do a recovery boot, I couldn't switch on etc...

Yep it actually does void warranty, that is why my DHD is still on stock. You can go play dumb and take it in for repairs not saying a word about flashing

Who knows you might get lucky

My HTC Desire HD just died today. I checked on it at lunch time and it was off - knowing the battery issues with the phone I assumed it needed to be charged.

When I got home I chucked it on charge - but it didn't come on - I then noticed that the LED was off.

I removed battery, changed to a different battery and tried to power again. NOTHING. Not able to boot off battery or charger or boot in to recovery mode.

This phone is in on a contract with Virgin Mobile. What will they do when I take it in and they find Leedroid? Does custom firmware void warranty? (i'm partially sure it does). What are my options?

HELP PLEASE!
J

I wouldn't stress too much. If it's a hardware failure then there is little chance they'll bother checking the firmware. And if it is is the firmware they'll just do a wipe.

Well - I emailed the developer of the app - he said I can buy it directly from them but then won't be entitled to upgrades... guess that only leaves one way to do this.

so when is the DHD getting the GingerB update??? hope the SP's get the OTA updates sorted.

My wife can finally upgrade - now that we are looking for another DHD ... no vodacom store has stock .. all of them expect next week ... anybody know a place that has stock in the PTA/JHB area? Going away to the south coast Saturday - and would like to get her one b4 then..
:)

Thats why so many people have iPhones... they cant get a DHD and have to fall back to a second class device /duck

Bet you somewhere in the world there is an Apple warehouse full of Android phones

So you had to order it ... maybe if i order today .. i can get it on friday ... let me call them ...

I would love to get my Desire HD, but MTN has messed up so badly that I am still waiting  should I even bother trying to hunt the phone down or should I wait for the next version that comes out? Rumour has it that the htc pyramid will be anounced soon and by the time MTN gets their act together I can just as well go for that one. Any other phones similar to the Desire HD that might be confirmed soon?

Ok so its not gonna be the Evo 3D.... I have my phone for next year... its the HTC Sensation

It's kinda underwhelming... the 1GB storage.
Screen pixel density is very welcome, though.

I could see back in the 2.1 days where the 1 gig could have been an issue but to be honest since 2.2 I dont have a problem with it anymore.
Example I have all 24 Gameloft 3d Intence games, about another 40+ other applications and sitting on 830 MB left on my phone. It probably would have been cool to have 16 gig of ram and no need for an SD card but that would have pushed up the price.

Moving the more than 1 gig Argument to the nice to have instead of necessity field.

How is the storage managed on the Android 2.3?
Let's say you have 8GB storage on C:, how much is left for Virtual Memory?

Is there any noticisable slow-downs in any application as the storage space is reduced?

HTC Sence Skins

I dont know if its mentioned before but I found a wonderful list of Sense skins over at XDA.

If you registered (free) in XDA go hop on over to see some really cook skins apk's that you can download and install. No need for any root or custom apps, just install the skin's apk and enjoy the new look

Update: Dam this should have been a new thread... oh well

None is virtual, Memory for running applications is dedicated.

In the example of the DHD it has 768 MB RAM for running apps and 1.5 gig for internal storage if you add a SD card that becomes extra storage where applications can be moved to since Android 2.2. Only problem is when you plug in the device as a USB dongle/or remove the SD card, you dont have access to the applications on the card until rectified.

That could become a problem when trying to play very graphically intensive games then (loading textures into memory as one such example).
Perhaps an OS update might alleviate the issue somewhat.

In the PC world yes, on a mobile phone I dont think so esp the way the OS is designed to work. Remember even iPhone dont have virtual ram
Here is some stats to explain why this is a none issue
iPhone 3GS had only 256k of ram to run apps, the iPhone 4 has 512k
A game like say Asphalt 5 so called "exe'' = 10 meg and the data files is 150 meg so you can fit the entire 3D game into the memory. Something even PC's dont do.

Another thing about memory on mobiles to remember is that unlike PC's where data is stored on a HD, general storage is faster to access so swapping out data doesn't need it be stored in memory making it faster to access. The only reason PC applications use large amounts of ram is to cache data so that it doesn't have to wait for the slower hardrive. People only used virtual memory (ram is expensive) as a way to bypass or fool the memory required.

Which is probably another reason why a game based on the Unreal 3 engine won't be going to Symbian^3.
The current hardware on Symbian^3 uses a dedicated 3D HW accelerator (BCM2727) with 32MB RAM. This is then linked to an ARM processor.
This is then a similar "architecture" to a traditional PC.

So now:

1) Not only is the economical viability affected (a limited Symbian^3 user base)
2) Having to rewrite the application.

.... unless the application/game was written in QT, then because of the multi platform capability - it wouldn't be a problem.
