Hi There

I just got the HTC Hero on Wednesday on a upgrade, and I must say, Great phone!

There are still a lot of things I have to figure out, and as I read the "Tips&Tricks" thread here on mybroadband, I can see that most people are still trying to figure out how everything works. I would have posted my question in that thread, but it has been inactive for about a month now.

The main issues I have is the following, and if someone can help me, I would really appreciate it

1) The alarm clock, although set correctly, does not go off. I set the alarm for 7AM this morning, and although my phone is not set on silent, the alarm never went off. The date and time was correct as well as the "day of the week" option and the alarm selected as "on". I checked this after I eventually woke up, and set the alarm to go off in 2 minutes just to check. Out of the 5 times I tried, it only worked once or twice. This is a big problem, as an alarm is a critical function for me. Any ideas, or apps that work for you?

2) I still don't know how to "close" applications, so that it doesn't run in the background. Take for example the internet browser. There is no "close the application" button or function, so if you return to the home screen, the browser is still running. So it often happens that 15 apps are running at once in the background. I read the tips&tricks thread, and downloaded Taskiller, so I just kill all the programs I don't need. I also put an icon for Taskiller on the home screen that looks like a litte Robot with a number in the middle showing the amount of apps running and the memory used. So with a click of a button, all tasks can be stopped at once. Is this the only way to completely close applications?

3) Rom upgrading. My phone came with the following software, ROM and Kernel (whatever all these mean)
Android version: 1.5
Kernel: 2.6.27.8dd6deee
Build: 2.73.1104.4
Software: 1.0.0.A6288

Which of these can/should I update and how? I noticed that some applications need android 1.6, so can the version be updated, and also, is it safe/recommended to update the above?

So far I am very happy with the phone, I just need to at least fix the alarm clock, and make sure I am running the latest software/ROM/versions.

Thanks

uninstall the task killer app... and things will run smoothly..i promise.

Hi
to answer #2 http://www.androidza.co.za/content/two-most-important-android-downloads the advanced task killer works like a charm.

on to your alarm issue i have the alarm setup on my phone and it works perfectly, although it could be that too many apps are running, hence the lag/delay in executing the alarm. i have found that when too many apps are running the phone does take a big hit.
so try out the adv task killer from the market and see if that sorts out your issues.

it terms of roms - you're just gna have to wait it out like the rest of use ;)

Hi. Are you talking from experience? So your alarm works perfectly every time? Ok, so if I uninstall TasKiller, how do I quit apps and prevent 15 programs from running at once in the background, eating my battery time? For example, if I play a game, I don't know to quit the game, and it just stays open in the background. The same with most of the applications and browser. What if I put the "clocks" application under the Taskiller ignore list?

It really irritates me that I can't get to close applications, as there is only a "back" button and a "home" button, or am I missing something?

yip...had me irate for over a week and that solved the problem. The task killer apps interferes with the clock process thus the cause for the issue.

If you really want to kill apps the Astro File Manager has an option to kill processes which i only use very rarely. The app does not run in the background afaik since the android os puts it to low priority so no cpu clock cycles. i do think that it does not immediately release the RAM but will in the event you start up other apps. As a test, start about eight apps in sequence and close each one, i am pretty sure that the first app loaded wont appear on the running process list... just my 2c

Well, as long as I get my alarm to work, I don't have much to complain about the Hero. In fact its awesome. I will wait for the new updates, as it is also a bit irritating to know you don't have the latest update and that some of the cool apps wont work on it. By the way, I noticed that Flash player does not work, or that the phone cannot play flash (except for youtube). Is that a ROM issue or do I need to download Adobe Flash Player?

I have aqlso got Hero with advanced task killer. Had the same problem with alram not going off. My fix was: 1) do not kill the CLOCK app with the task killer. After I stopped killing the CLOCK app the alarm function worked!!!
Hope this helped. The Hero is a GREAT phone :D

agreed.... i used to kill all apps as the last thing i did before going to bed and sleep... then realized i was killing the alarm. tell task killer to ignore alarm clock, or as i did, set alarm then dont kill anything.
whats nice on 2.1 android, it has silent built in task killer so no need anymore for 3rd party killer apps.

You have a Hero with 2.1 Android??!

task killer stop your phone from sync with your pc. i have to reboot the phone just to get my pc to sync. I have tried to add it to the ignore list but its not available... the task killer works like a charm, justs needs some tweaking i guess..

yes i was running 2.1 villian rom on my hero for a while. i now have nexus 1 which is 2.1 and seriously doesnt need to run any third party task killers

A friend sent me this 'heads-up' (that was on the XDA developers forums) on the 2.1 for the Hero .....

The long wait is coming to an end - the HTC Hero is finally getting the Android 2.1 update this April. The CDMA version of the Hero is getting the update too, a bit sooner in fact (March 26). But it's the GSM version that interests us, so here it goes.
The Android 2.1 Eclair update for the HTC Hero will begin rolling out in European countries in April. It won't happen all at once, some countries will have to wait till May to get it.

Here's what the schedule looks like:
• Nordic countries, Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia - April 2
• T-Mobile UK - April 16
• Orange UK - April 16
• Orange Spain - April 16
• T-Mobile Germany - April 16
• Orange France - April 22
Vodacom South Africa - April 22
• Hutchison 3G UK - April 22
• Belgium - May 4
• Turkey - May 4
• T-Mobile Poland - May 10
• T-Mobile Hungary - May 10
• T-Mobile Macedonia - May 10

Now, strictly speaking this isn't official but the XDA forums are a pretty reliable source of information.

So, HTC Hero owners might want to put off buying an HTC Legend for now. After the update, the Hero will be brought into the world of Eclair - check out the change log.

I have a love/hate relationship with my HTC Hero .... after so many years using Nokia Symbian, I initially struggled with the Android OS, but now have it sorted. But I will root to 2.1 when it is stabilised

Alarm does not function when phone is off/charging

On the alarm issue. I noticed that my Hero's alarm does not function if the phone is off and charging as do other Sonyericsson's and nokia's. Is this normal?

Mine works while charging, but haven't tried it while it is off. I just changed to Advanced Task killer, and then just set the alarm volume every night and make sure not to kill any tasks after that (alarm and clock is set to task killer's ignore list). This seems to work well for me.

The only other thing that bothers me about the alarm, is that once it goes off, just touching anything else than "snooze", kills the alarm. Which sucks when you thought you pressed "snooze". But I guess there are a lot of other alarm apps to be downloaded on the Market, so check that out too.

I am due for an upgrade and have been thinking of going HTC, but this phone sounds pretty buggy - you can't close apps (without task killer/manager)?
