Thought it might be a good idea to consolidate all android based HTC phone tips, tricks and other interesting things into one thread.

I'll start with some basic tips I picked up in the first few days of having my G2 (I just got my Magic the other day so I'm in no way a guru yet, ill leave rom flash advice to more experienced hackers for now).

Leaf

HTC is represented locally by Leaf and as such they provide after sales support for HTC in SA. However, the G1 and G2 are exclusive to MTN and Vodacom respectively which means that initially Leaf will not carry as many accessories for the phones, this means that it is up to Vodacom and MTN to provide phone specific accessories such as docking stations (this might change later on). However, Leaf still provides support and I must say they are quite helpful. Furthermore there are also a number of generic HTC accessories that will work on the G1 and G2 (a bit more on that later).

If you are having issues with your G2 before you take it to vodacom it is a good a idea to have it checked out by the leaf technicians at Cedar Square. Vodacom will probably send it off to leaf anyway so it might be quicker to pop around to leaf yourself. (Im sure the same holds for the G1 on MTN).

There are three Leaf shops in JHB: Cedar Square, Fourways and Vodaworld. If you have a technical query and/or need have your phone assessed for RMA I advise you go straight to the Cedar Square shop/office (EDIT: It seems that you void your 2yr Vodacom warranty if Leaf do any work on the phone without it having gone through Vodacom first, this will leave you with the 1 year manufacturers warranty. So rather stick to Vodacom if you know there is hardware damage and ask leaf for advice only), have them take a look and then take it back to MTN/Vodacom if there is something wrong - this may end up taking less time than it would have if you took it to Voda/MTN first. The Fourways mall store seems to stock more accessories though. Haven't been to the Vodaworld store but I'm sure they have technicians ready to help there as well.

Accessories

Accessories specific to the G2 seem to be absent from the local market, I spoke to the guys at leaf and they said Vodacom will eventually stock phone specific accessories. A must have accessory is the 3.5mm jack which is luckily a standard HTC multi port to audio out converter. There are two converters/adapters to choose from: YC A200 and YC A300. I couldn't find any significant differences between the two besides the packaging. Leaf fourways mall stock both with the A200 being R188 and the A300 being +-R250. I got the YC A200. The adapter includes 3.5mm and 2.5mm jacks as well as a extUSB port. I am not sure if there are smaller adapters around in SA (IE with just a 3.5mm, anyone?).

Apps

Another important consideration is the lack of access to that (or the) android market. Part of what makes an android phone so powerful (and indeed what makes the iPhone powerful) is the ability to install apps. Leaf have launched the open market which is a lame attempt at bringing some apps to the local market. An alternative here is to follow nlt's guide on rooting a G2 and getting the market place going, their are similar tuts out for the G1 as well (read up on what you are doing first though and I suggest you play around with the SDK first for while before you start hacking your phone). My firmware flash went perfectly without any hiccups. If you have a laptop or UPS its always a good idea to do firmware flashing / rom hacks connected to one of these in case Eskom failcaeks.

Video Playback

The format should be mp4 or 3GP AND the resolution must be the phone screen res (480x320). Luckily if you Google "Android video converter" you'll find lots of free software to do the job for you. (thanks duncan1a)

Please post any tips, corrections, questions etc. (Also I'm not sure if a similar thread has been started but a search of the forum did not yield any such threads:rolleyes:.)

EDIT: ok so there is another thread going with some tips on what apps to install and so on. It can be found here. Seems my search skills failed me first time I searched for such threads.

Thanks for this. Please note though: taking it to Leaf will void your 2 year Vodacom warranty.

perhaps we can start some healthy consumer pressure here (I don't really want to void my warranty ROMing my phone):

I've written to ERC Consumer Watch about this hobbling that Leaf have done to our android phones and they're taking it up. Perhaps if a few more people write in we will get some results, or at least a straight answer re if we're getting the Market...

Hmmm, was not aware that the Vodacom warranty is void if you take it to Leaf. Thanks.

I spoke to a Leaf rep last week Friday who said Vodacom send in RMA'd devices to them. She advised that I bring my phone in to them to get checked out first as Vodacom will probably take my phone in for more than three days (probably even longer).

I was told this by the Vodacom consultant when I bought my phone. I asked about the warranty and she specifically pointed out not to take it to leaf first. If leaf touch it first, then the warranty is just the HTC 1 yr one - not the 2 yr Vodacom one.

Agreed, we shouldn't have to void our warranty to use the phone the way it was intended to be used.

I see, that makes sense. Will add it above.

Top Apps for me so far.

Barcode Scanner is great but it doesnt do a good job of finding products - there are other cool features though.

Compare Everything works well if you want to find product prices albeit in dollars not rands.

Metal Detector - Lulz at how accurate it is.

NetMeter - Bandwidth and CPU usage meter.

FTPServer - FTP access to your phone via Wifi or 3g.

nswPlayer - A pretty good video player and media browser.

VLCmote - control VLC via your android phone.

Still have loads of apps to check out, anyone have suggestions?

Yes these are on/from the Market.
There are other ways of getting them as well. You can download the apks (torrents are a good source) and then load them onto your SD card and simply install them. Legally its a grey area since these apps are free but i'm sure there are numerous EULA clauses that state obtaining these apps other than via the Market is a no-no.

Had trouble playing videos on your Android phone?

The format should be mp4 or 3GP AND the resolution must be the phone screen res (480x320). Luckily if you Google "Android video converter" you'll find lots of free software to do the job for you.

Now you can watch your movies on your phone...

i see VC are running a 'special' +-R500 for 130 talk minutes and 200MB data i think somewhere around there, u guys think its worthwhile

Depends on if you use that much talk time and data - i don't, so I went for a lesser contract and paid in. You can save a lot on the data by connecting through your wifi. If you don't have wifi I can see you using that 200MB p/m

Regarding connecting via wifi, is anyone here connecting to a wifi network that is in turn connected to a machine running Internet Connection Sharing? Like this:

HTC Magic <Wifi> Linksys AP <Ethernet> Windows XP Machine <PCMCIA Senetch Modem> Internet

It seems Android struggles with ICS, my iPhone and winmo phones have no issues connecting via this setup but the browser, youtube app and any other system app has no internet access with this setup. Funny enough Gtalk and Opera connect fine. If I take out the ICS and replace it with a PPPoE connection directly from AP to modem all is fine.

Another curious result is the output of tracert to the Magic compared to other Wifi devices:

Magic
Tracing route to 192.168.0.144 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 99 ms 112 ms 102 ms 192.168.0.144
Trace complete.

iPhone
Tracing route to 192.168.0.9 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 73 ms 2 ms 2 ms 192.168.0.9
Trace complete.

Laptop running WinXP
Tracing route to 192.168.0.28 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 21 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.0.28
Trace complete.

It may be to do with how android deals with ICMP messages but either way why are the roundtrips on the Magic so long? Can anyone else please test this and see if their magic exhibits similar properties?

If you have R1899 to pay in rather get a normal talk 130, that R+-500 p/m is, if I understand correctly, the financed option which works out more expensive in the long run. I took an iPhone on a similar deal when they came out and realised later on that it works out really expensive.

There really should be a divx, avi player for the Android, not?

Interestingly, Google have just announced native Android app development - meaning that developers can develop for the underlying Linux and not just the Android Java layer, which means that we should get a flood of Linux apps for Android!

Anyone say 'Amarok' or 'VLC'?
