HTC Magic (G2) and Dream (G1) thread

Hold the press!!! I just spoke to Leaf's MD and we're getting the Android Market in the next two weeks!!!! Wooohooo!

They will SMS every Magic owner with instructions to either download and ROM the phone or take it to a Voda Care Centre who will flash it for you.

Yay yay yay!

Nice! ;)

I bought my HTC Magic on Sunday and I've been using it since. I took it back on Wednesday because the screen alignment was slightly out. In portrait mode, it was very difficult to hit the letter 'P' and the backspace. I tried the keyboard calibration several times, but this did not help.

It's as if the screen stops being sensitive right at the edge of the screen. Of course, the other side of the screen where the Q letter is, is fine. I phoned Leaf and asked them about this and they said that it's definitely not normal.

I'm waiting for it to be sent back to Vodacom in JHB and waiting for an R number for a new one/refund. Just so that I can be clear, in order to hit the letter 'P', the center of your finger would have to be more than past the center of the key; to the left. Obviously this would be very annoying since anytime I need to type a word with the letter P, it wouldn't recognisde it properly, sometimes having to press it 4 times or more to get it to recognise. This problem is accentuated by the fact that the backspace key also had problems. Everytime there's a mistake, you have to hit backspace... same problem.

I just hope that Vodacom give me the green light for an Out-Of-Box failure.

better or worse?

It looks very nice. I'm not sure about Sense UI. Personally, I like a minimalist, Zen interface with only the few things I need all the time, which is one of the things I like most about Android. Sense UI looks a bit too busy.

That said, it's got multi-touch, Flash, and some fantastic widgets. i reeeaally like how the've done those widgets. There are also some very interesting things they've done with contacts and how different areas tie together.

All in all, it looks fantastic. If i thought the current Magic was better than the iPhone, Hero blows it out the water

One thing I've always wanted is a reminder application that can trigger an alarm without having to add a calendar entry.

Something like pay xxx when you get home @ 7 idea. Anyway I wrote one, it's still early days but if anybody want to try it here is the link:

BTW: I used this as my gateway into understanding the android api and I must say, having written symbian software before android is a dream

Does anyone know how to set the default calendar on Android to be my google calendar? It's keeps using "My Calendar" as the default and then I have to change it to my google cal every time I add a entry?

hmm, mine has always been my Google calendars...

Ok, so my Magic is giving me some serious crap!

Earlier I noticed that I lost network connectivity, did a reboot and now my phone is stuffed.

Whenever I switch it on it ask's for my pin, then after a bit I can see the sim card is unlocked but after another minute or 2 I get the com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. This just goes on and on.

Now I have a useless phone on my hands. Brilliant! I'm still running the original ROM and if I put my SIM in my wife's phone it works fine.

Guess I'm having a fight with HTC / Leaf tomorrow morning. All I can say I'm very dissapointed at this time in the software. Hopefully it's not android itself but the custom ROM vodacom installed on these phones.

HTC Magic Specs

Hi guys

I’m planning on getting the HTC Magic next month. I’ve noticed that there are different versions of the Magic regarding specs. There seems to be a 198mb and a 288mb version. What version is being shipped to us?

can someone who got the magic from vodacom tell me what size micro sd came with it?
thanks

@DozerZA : You are correct, there are 2 versions. Fortunately, for once us South African's weren't shafted and actually got the 32A board, which is the 288 Mhz version!
