HTC Magic SenseUI upgrade

xda-developers

In summary... Android itself rocks... Support from HTC (primarily) and Vodacom (somewhat) though... crap as all hell.

While I can't comment on Android, (I'm a WinMo user), if you have a HTC, then forum.xda-developers.com is your friend.

Spend a bit of time there ... type in the name of your model & jump to the dedicated forums & READ ... you won't believe how much "tweaking" :D:twisted::D can be done.

Don't assume something cannot be done because HTC/LEAF can't help you. I go to them for Hardware & nothing else!

Simple example ... my HTC HD2 had 12 hours battery life the 1st 2 days of having it ... PANIC ... head over to xda ... READ READ READ ... simple install of a FREE [legally!] app ... now from full to 24% is over 50 hours.

HTC is the best phone out there, bar NONE (yes, I HAVE played with an iPhone ... wasn't impressed).

It takes way too long and leaf never responds to questions regarding this.

I mean, how can they not even know IF there's going to be an upgrade. They're not just waiting for the process to work through - they haven't even established the IF. bloody useless

A few things:
1) The SA HTC Magic is an unbranded phone, of the same hardware platform as in Europe (32A). Which means that _technically_ there is nothing stopping us from loading it (Europe also use the same GSM bands, so no prob there either). So as far as I can see the only thing blocking it is bureaucratic red tape.
2) Also note that Leaf is effectively only the local distributor for HTC. They have no control on what updates get released when/how, that is between HTC, Google and the telcos, who just keep pointing at each other it seems.

"Only a few countries has paid apps." .... WHY???? There's nothing stopping me from using my credit card at Amazon or any other international site, so WTF can we not purchase in the Android Market (AM) using our CC? I can understand for now not being able to charge for apps out of SA, as that requires Google to be able to deposit funds into the account, which requires merchant accounts and international acquiring agreements... yada yada yada. I can use Google Checkout (what AM uses) at other places online, why not in AM

"HTC has confirmed numerous times that they are skipping 1.6 and going straight to 2.x. All they are doing with this release is providing the SenseUI until they release 2.1 in Q2 2010.".... Yes, and how long had 1.6 been out before they finally made that statement? And HTC never said they would be giving it to us in SA. Last communication I had with HTC/Leaf was :
"It has not been confirmed by Google South Africa when there will be a release for the Android 1.6 for the HTC Magic." and
"It has not been confirmed if the Android 2.x Operating System will be launched in the African Region"

Yay...

Leaf Support Sucks!!!

I contacted Google and HTC regarding the 2.0 or 1.6 upgrade for the HTC Magic here in South Africa and they all directed me back to Leaf.
Leaf turn around and say they waiting for HTC and Google to release the SA version for them. BUT if you look around the internet, most overseas users have already upgraded - It only bloody useless Leaf here in SA that is holding us back.

LEAF you SUCK!!!!

The upgrade to 2.1 (1.6 is being skipped) is something completely different from the SenseUI update, make sure you ask leaf about the right thing. Latest news is the Sense update should be released in a couple of weeks (touch wood, they're busy testing it), while no HTC except the Nexus supports anything above android 1.5 yet. Hopefully the update to eclair will be released to leaf as soon as it is available overseas, it seems they didnt get the SenseUI one till about 2 weeks ago.

Has the Sense UI update for Magic been released yet? I read somewhere that the tattoo is not getting android 2. Is the magic gonna get the 2.1 upgrade or is it only gonna be available for the Hero.

I found a link to download the update through another site because HTC website won't let me download it with my serial number. Unfortunately the SA HTC's have the .0010 SDL and not the .0009, so its extremely difficult (and will void warranty) to hack it and install other Roms. I tried to install the rom with the Sense UI, and it failed on the phone, so never installed. The only way to do it is to hack the SDL, which I'm just not prepared to do yet.

eish tricky one.... the magic is pretty close to discontinued, i think they still making it , but surely not for much longer. the new android stuff is just light years ahead of it.
if i were you i would look at another android device. maybe even something the other manufacturers are selling. android is good across all platforms.

Another reason why LEAF SUCK!!!!

why-you-probably-shouldnt-buy-an-htc-phone-in-south-africa http://www.arbitraryuser.com/blog/2...ly-shouldnt-buy-an-htc-phone-in-south-africa/

Check some of the comments too

There was a link to that exact article somewhere else in the forum, unfortunately the author has his facts in a bit of a muddle - The upgrade that this thread is about (and that the author was asking about) ONLY gives SenseUI. It's not an upgrade to 1.6, last I checked HTC hasn't released that at all, or an upgrade for the Hero to 2.1

That said, this update is pushing on four months old now - has anyone heard more about it? Last I heard leaf was waiting on approval from the service providers to release it.

Doesn't bode well for the support we'll get on future devices, can't wait for the Desire!

RANDOM POST

The sense UI update for the HTC magic has been released.

Just go to leaf.co.za and download the new ruu firmware updater and it will install the sense ui on the phone.

it is AWESOME! :)

It's about time, that only took like four months :P Looks like the Desire will get Froyo... Sometime in 2012. Hopefully just before all the undead Mayans kill us.

I wish they would give us Android 2.1 already :(

Only the Hero is officially getting 2.1. Not a huge loss I would think, by the time leaf releases the update for the Hero, most Magic users would probably have upgraded in any case.

Wow. What an awesome update. I love it! I installed it late last night and I am loving it!!!

PS: It still only says 1.5. Isn't the Hero 1.6?

Hero is only 1.5 currently. Tattoo is 1.6. I'm waiting for the 2.1 upgrade for my Hero.
