So I've been putting off getting a contract for almost 2 years now until I find the phone I definitely want. Though the recent Android devices have been fantastic, I'm a huge HTC fan (Desire ) and haven't been 'wowed' by HTC's past releases.. until now. They've just brought out a phone that will get me into contract land; the HTC One X.

The full spec list is here. The stand out features are:

Quad-core 1.5GHz CPU (Nvidia Tegra 3)
1GB RAM
Android 4.0 ICS (Sense UI)
32GB memory
8mp camera
4.7" display
One dislike is that the battery cannot be removed and there is no SD Card slot.

This phone is large. Its larger than the Galaxy S2 but smaller than the Galaxy Note. The nearest sized phone is the Galaxy Nexus - though the One X is a tiny bit smaller and has a slightly larger display. I think the only phone that will compete with it in terms of specs will be the Galaxy S3, whenever that is released. You can find the video review of the One X below:

My only concern about this phone is the size; how does it feel in your pocket? How large is it in your hands? I'd need to hold one (or a Galaxy Nexus) to get the feel of it before ultimately making a decision.

Expansys have it on their website for sale already. Would anyone here know when Vodacom/MTN/CellC would be getting it?

So it's between this phone and the Galaxy S3... I already own the Galaxy S2, so this will be a good upgrade....

A good balanced review imo at cnet

Main talking point to come out of this reveiw - bad battery life (according to HTC due to a software fault) and quad core overkill.

I would like some overkill though.

I love this phone's design as well, BUT.....HTC decided that they'll put a crappy battery (once again!!) in their flagship phone.

Tests done confirmed that the phone can't even make it past one day.

I will never understand why HTC is so STUPID! :(

The average joe who does NOT read online reviews will be more inclined to buy a slim phone vs a bulky one. Its only after they have used it for a week do they notice its got a crappy battery life vs a bulkier phone. HTC does not care as they have still made a sale :).

The battery life on this phone is being compared to one on the HTC Desire, which is OK if you manage it. If the phone is used non stop you will not get a day out of it, but if its used in a modest manner you'll get a day out of it. If thats the case it will work well for me as I do nightly charges anyway. But as nadimm said above, the poor battery life is a software fault which will surely be addressed with a patch.

I'm sure the custom roms will be able to manage the battery and CPU usage in order to provide longer battery performance.

So, anyone know if/when our networks will start offering this phone?

I remember reading that its got to do with Tegra not switching over to that 5th companion core. So definitely software problem.

How is the camera? Is it anywhere near the quality of the old n8 (or any middle class point and shoot camera, for that matter)? I can live with the battery though. Let's hope the s3 will have a decent camera (in particular the sensor).

According to The Verge review, while the phone was being reviewed by them HTC pushed an update out to resolve the problem:

BATTERY LIFE

Initially, I thought that battery life was going to be a major concern for this phone. After all, the notion of four Cortex-A9 cores spinning at up to 1.5GHz paired to a dazzling, bright 4.7-inch display doesn't exactly instill confidence that you're going to make it through a day on a single charge. In fact, I didn't at first — I was getting 6-7 hours with almost no use whatsoever. Fortunately, HTC pushed a software update during our review process that more or less quashed the issue. In my stress test with continuous streaming video at maximum loudspeaker volume and maximum screen brightness while connected to both Wi-Fi and 3G, I got four hours and 22 minutes of usage before the phone turned itself off. In a more reasonable test involving "normal" usage, the One X yielded 13 hours and 38 minutes, including a half hour of continuous Riptide gameplay (which looks amazing on this processor and display, by the way) and well over a dozen benchmark runs of various types.

So it now behaves a lot better with the update!

I don't think the camera is anything to jump & shout about sadly. Here are some samples: http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/2/2919380/htc-one-x-camera-sample

In the full review they test the video recording (towards the bottom): http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/2/2919202/htc-one-x-review

True that.

But the phone is 4.7'' big, so surely there much be more room for a beefier battery....was thinking a 2200 mAh battery would be the minimum to drive that big display and 4 processors.

Well, I have a GNex, and I can honestly that the size doesn't bother me. Yes, it can be a bit awkward to use one-handed, but it's not uncomfortable in my pocket (thanks to the thin profile of the device, something which also applies to the One X), and any tradeoffs are more than worth it in exchange for the vastly improved experience you get while browsing the web, reading text, watching videos, playing games, or anything else that uses the screen. I'm not sure I would be comfortable trading up to Galaxy Note-sized proportions, but the 4.6" screen on the Nexus definitely feels okay to me.

I've read a few reviews. Most have said its the best camera on a phone bar the 12MP nokia. But then again I see some guys on the forum not too impressed.

Its looks good enough for me though.

My contract is up on the 15th of May.... I currently have the HTC Desire (rooted MIUI). Best phone I have ever had! So the One X is my next logical step... Question is, when will it be available?

@nadimm... my wife has the N8 with the 12MP cam, brilliant pics, but rubbish OS!

My upgrade was due in March (contract in May). Also on the desire, running CM7.2. I'm an HTC fan (I even liked Sense - just no ram for it), and I hope that the battery life issue has been resolved - I will wait for more reviews that confirm this.

I flatten my battery every day, but all my stuff is running full time (BT, Wireless and GPS).... so anything better than that is ok with me!
