My main complaint on the Tytn I was that the screen was not viewable in the sun.

Is the Tytn II any better?

Also, something I missed on the Tytn I that I liked on my old SEP910i was the ability to answer the phone without having to look for the green phone button by pressing the scroll button on the side. Has this feature been added to the Tytn II?

My Tytn I was taken off me recently and I need to replace it with something!
I still prefer the Tytn II over what the Communicator and the SEP1i has to offer.

It seems to be a problem that most touch screen devices suffer from. The TyTn II is no exception.

I've found the Tomtom 6 installer that shipped with the Tytn2 overseas, I wonder if that'll fix the delay issue? You obviously have to buy the maps, but it's dirt cheap at 50EUROS in my opinion.

Lemme know if anyone wants to try it, it's a Kaiser specific installer.

Just 1 quick question about the Tytn II what is the build quality like. I was taking a close look at the model phone the guys have in the shops. Ok i know its just a model but sometimes these models are rather close to what the real phone actually is. The model looked a bit cheap as if you dropped it would fall apart etc
i.e. It didnt look very strong and robust. I got a SEW900i and the phone has fallen a few times and still works great even with all its swivel top.

What is the real phone like??

build quality is superb. it's a rock solid phone.

haven't dropped (touch wood) my device and i'd hate to, but i reckon it could withstand quite a few.

Yeh.. went to various stores in Canal Walk, none had stock except MTN, and I'm not supporting them, but besides that, here's the response from both stores:

Store 1:
I don't have stock, but even if I did, I wouldn't sell it to you cash, because I get more money selling contracts, so if you want it, you have to take a contract.

Store 2:
We have stock, R10,000.

Maybe you should sort out that little problem first. You don't go drop-kicking a R7000 phone.

I think the only weakness is the sliding keyboard. There is a small amount of play when it's concealed.

I Agree. I think this is true for all high-end Multi-Multi-Multi-function phones.

I just want to say the the amount of play on mine is really very small but noticable.

I could possibly get it for R7500. Just got to check with my suppliers.

The only problem I have with mine is that when I try put it into sleep mode (I don't lock the device, just put it into sleep mode and have to wake it with the power button), I end up pushing the buttons on the other side or sliding out the keypad (depending on how I hold it). Besides that, I agree, a rock solid phone.

I've been using Handymap and TomTom for a little while now and am stuck. Handymap has a better navigational screen and alerts you of speed cameras, but TomTom just works smoother. I suppose it'll go down to cost, which would mean TomTom wins.

TomTom cost R700-R800 for each map update. Map updates with Handymap is free twice a year for lifetime. Therefore TomTom costs more.

Yes, they had stock.

The one near the food court didn't have stock, and wouldnt sell it to me if they did have stock unless I took out a contract <-- good business practice that.

Not my experience. Have had the Imate Pocket PC, Tytn I, and now the Tytn II. Never had a nicer phone. Not sluggish at all.

Hi All,

I recently got my tytn 2 and I must say I'm impressed. One or two frustrating things I would like your opinions about:
1> The alarm in WM6 is, in my opinion, cr@p. Any ideas were I can get a good alarm app preferably free.

2> I cant get my phone to work as modem, I have tried following the instructions in the manual but no luck. Also I don’t think I have the correct access settings for vodacom.

3> When the band settings are on auto auto does the phone use more power? I assume when its set to GSM 3G is not available?

4> Is it a problem that the phone keeps an GPRS/3G connection open for hours after first connecting, as far as I know it does not result in any extra costs.

Any help would be appreciated.

1. Maybe it will help if you change the alarm tone.

2. I have had no trouble there. Please be more specific.

3. If you set it to GSM only it will not use 3G. You might try to select "GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(2100)" as the band to use. This will probably restrict the number of frequencies the phone searches for. This setting is all that is needed for South Africa anyway.

4. It shouldn't result in any costs but I personally think it does impact on battery life. There is a utility out here called kaisertweak that I use. You can define the period after which an unused GPRS connection will automatically be closed. You can of course terminate the connection manually in the connection manager.
