Hey guys,

My Nokia has finally failed me and insurance are allowing me to choose another phone. Unfortunately I'm limited to R3000  , which sets my limits off the Desire...

I see I'm amble to take the Wildfire... Specs are pretty decent, besides the smaller screen and of course half the processor.

My question is, is it a decent phone? Any one using one? Worth it?
If I went for the Desire, I will need to pay in an additional R2500 which I dont have right now, but dont want to take something thats not worth it at all...

Would really appreciate as much feedback as possible. Especially if anyone is using a Wildfire...

Thx

The Wildfire's specs look kinda low. If you get a Hero or Magic (or similar) you at least have 480x320 resolution, this Wildfire only has 320x240.

edit: The HTC Legend is a good option, if you can get that.

The Legend is a very good option, but I think it is only about R500 less than the Desire.

I got the Desire cash for R6500 a month ago and the Legend was R6000

Samsung Galaxy S still kicks both of them in the panty. At roughly R5500 it can't be beat...

I can then probably retaliate with this.

Notice that that page states it's ESTIMATED, not actual. If you read one of the "official" Samsung Galaxy S threads here you'd see that it's actually priced around the R5500 mark. Was posted yesterday sometime...

Well, you said that the Galaxy kicks the Desire's ass, but the link is comparing the Galaxy with the iPhone 4. In all fairness, both of us could probably find a dozen different articles saying that this phone or that is better.

Yes, I did notice that, that's why my original post said ALLEGEDLY. If the official prepaid price is indeed R5500, that is an excellent price.

Even at R6500 it would be worth it - still a couple thousand cheaper than an iPhone (3GS, not even considering 4 in this price range) and the specs put it a step above the Desire...

specs put it a step above the Desire...

The specs of the Galaxy are not that different to the Desire.

For me, notable differences are:
Galaxy has a 4" Super Amoled screen to the Desire's 3,7" Amoled screen
The Desire has a camera flash, but the Galaxy does not
Galaxy has a slightly better battery (1500mah to Desire's 1400mah)

Have I missed something?

More powerful processor? Even though both are rated at 1GHz, the Galaxy's Hummingbird processor is notably stronger than the Desire's Snapdragon. Trust me, I toyed with the Desire for a LONG time before finally settling on the Galaxy S. Also, the image quality from the SGS's camera is outstanding. The GSM Arena comparison rated the image quality of the SGS's above that of the iPhone 4, which has built-in flash...

Didn't know about processors - I thought since both are 1GHz they are the same? Do you have a link to an article that compares them?

The camera on the Galaxy might be good, but no flash would be a dealbreaker for me. I would rather have a decent camera that can take pictures during the day and at night, rather than an excellent camera that only takes pictures during the day.

By the way, we really managed to derail this thread ;)

Try this and this... ;)

Glad I could oblige... I think this should be the end of the derail for now... :p

Agreed ;)

Back to the topic - the Wildfire, at least according to reviews, seems like a very good phone. It is basically a mini Desire. The biggest complaint I've read so far is that the screen resolution is not high enough.

But yeah, if you browse around you could get a nice 2nd hand phone for 3k. Probably not the iPhone 3Gs, but definitely a 3G. Also seen people selling HTC Heroes for less than that, so just check out the classifieds in different forums
