Huawei AX3 Router

I have an edgerouterx (192.168.1.1) as the main router, and setup the wifi on the AX3 with disabled DHCP and set a static ip of 192.168.1.2 and chose AP mode.

I had the LAN cable plugged into LAN1. Wifi working fine except the red light on the front of the router. I didn't think anything of it until I realised while logging into it that the date and time was wrong and couldn't change it and assumed it needed an internet connection as it was giving a "not connected to internet" kind of error.

I decided to move the LAN cable from LAN1 to WAN (without changing any settings) then the light turned green, wifi still works, but now I cannot login with 192.168.1.2, even when I move the lan cable back. Wifi still works so I haven't bothered pressing the reset button and starting again.

I thought I would just check here first. I can't find what the IP would be, even looking in the edgerouterx device list I don't see it.

I'm not sure what the IP is now, but you might be able to see it on your computer by looking at the gateway on the network connection. When you eventually regain access (a reset might be easiest), leave DHCP on when you plug in to the WAN port. Also ensure that the edgerouter and ASX are on different subnets (e.g. put the ASX on 192.168.2.x).

The gateway is 192.168.1.1 which is the edgerouterx although I haven't checked this while connected via wifi. If I enable DHCP on the huawei won't it clash with the DHCP on the edgerouter. Also, I won't see all the devices on the network on the edgerouter? I want to keep using the edgerouterx for its QOS ability.

edit: but thanks, will try that out.

Then you can't connect to the WAN port of the AX3. You'll need to figure out why the AX3 wasn't working in AP mode to keep it all on one subnet.

I've got the AH WS5200. Bought another one and have them meshed.

Seems to work OK- is there supposed to be seamless handover between APs?

I wish I'd known about AH offering the AX3 though- I'd have bought one of those to mesh with the WS5200 then done an upgrade or something down the line...

As it is, on my slowest fibre offering, I'm not going to hit the limits of the WS5200 soon anyway...

I have exactly the same, except with the Chinese version of the AX3. Anyway, handover is seamless as I move around the house.

Indeed. It backwards compatible with the WS5200 and other Huawei routers too.
I'd like to do a bit of a thread revival. I bought a WS5200 last week for meshing with my AX3 (from Afrihost).

No matter what I do, I cannot get these 2 routers to mesh. I've tried sans cable, with cable, AX3 as primary, WS5200 as primary and nothing I do works. I've done a factory reset on both, multiple times while trying out different configs.

Trying without cable, the primary router will start flashing as if setting up the mesh, but the secondary then ends up with the default wifi SSID (which is open, nogal, not encrypted), but with internet connectivity- doesn't matter which one is set up to be primary, same story. It doesn't seem to pic up the SSID form the primary router.

Using cables (which I would prefer), the only thing I've managed to do is set up both routers manually, but what I end up with, is not a mesh network. I simply get two wifi networks with the same SSIDs but on different subnets. I like using 10.0.0.x for my home setup- the other- secondary- router then ends up on the 192.x range - not a meshed network. The primary router (doesn't matter which one is set up to be primary) never starts blinking to indicate meshing.

Both routers report being on the latest firmware. Any help? Anyone?

So with the Huawei routers the mesh should works seamlessly. When you press the H button on both you should end up with only 1 x SSID or 2x if you separate them. The fact that it's Open sounds like a config issue because by default if the Huawei router is reset it broadcasts a single open wifi network.

If you use the cable it essentially changes from a mesh to either an extender (in extender mode) or just another router.

One of the devices might be faulty if it refuses to mesh.

I've done factory resets using the reset button as well as from the router control page so unless the factory config is fubar, it's not something I did.

Well, not according to your own help page. It should be possible to have it in mesh mode connected via cable.

Story of my life... How would I figure this out?

Cabled, simply plug from LAN on primary to wan on secondary and Bob's your uncle. Secondary doesn't need any config.

If it's giving issues first thing I'd do is reset the secondary to ensure any manual settings aren't interfering.

Let me try to get 2 of these to mesh them with wired connection and confirm if it's working. I only ever did wireless and it was the easiest to set up. I might be wrong on the wired mesh setup. I know the Deco does refer to Wired Mesh as wired backbone.

I will get back to you on this one.

Did that multiple times already, exactly as you suggested. Bob's not my uncle.

Yes- typing this from my pc with cable connection to primary router.
And you're sure it goes to wan on secondary? And then you just leave it for about 30 secs until the light goes green, don't push any buttons.

Primary connected and online.
Secondary after a factory reset. No buttons pushed (not that it makes any difference)

Secondary confirmed connected via WAN

Have you configured primary via app or web interface? I noticed there is an option to turn HiLink on/off - maybe confirm that it's activated on primary?

I've tried to configure via the web interface, via HiLink, as well as both the old and new AI life apps from Huawei, on both routers. I've made sure Hilink is on, on both routers, even manually changed the passwords for those to match. Still nothing.

That is really weird. I've setup a number of these and they all connected first time, every time. Run ws5200/AX3 (wireless) at home and B618/ws5200 (cabled) at the office. Can't imagine why yours isn't working. Sorry bud.

Hopefully @AfriNatic is able to find something in his testing.
