HUAWEI B315s LTE router discussion thread.

Hi Guys,

I bought a Huawei B315s LTE router today and now want to set it up for the office.
For some reason I can't see where to change the default IP address of the unit to my own static address?

Is it possible to change the ip? (the lan ip not the dail up Ip)

A reason you can't find it, as it is in the wrong place:
Settings -> WLAN -> DHCP
You are limited to the Class C.
 
Hey guys, I have recently purchased one of these routers. Afrihost standard SIM is being delivered today. I am quite concerned though, I see the router (purchased from Edgars) has 'Telkom' on the front. Please tell me it is not hard-coded to Telkom only? Is there anything specific I need to know to get it to work on MTN through Afrihost?

Which Edgars did you buy this router from?

I've been to The Glen and Mall of the South, but they don't have them.

If anyone knows which Edgars in Gauteng have stock, please let me know. Thanks..

Update: I bought the last one from Edgars in Eastgate.
 
I bought mine from CNA Sandton City, they seemed to have a few on display.
 
It seems I am a chop. I changed the default password, but now I can't log into the router anymore. Is there a way to reset the password to the default without logging in?

I've had the B593 for 2 1/2 years on Telkom contract 45MB down in an area that does not have coverage. I had to buy the router and take data on pre-paid to test it myself, then moved to the contract. 2 very happy years. Then I thought the R599/unlimited deal would be a good move seeing the contract term is up ... BUT ...

Can you believe that Huawei would move from a very good B593 Firmware to such absolute and utter rubbish in the B315?
All the descriptions and menus are not very user friendly and very limiting! The helpline offered by Huawei on that microscopic piece of paper.. what a joke!

Any idea on a way around all the limitations? I need to move the network range from 192.168.8.1 to 10.0.0.x grrrr
 
1. There was one member claiming that 10.0.0.x was required, but despite of numerous questions he/she didn't come with any reason.
2. B593 has utterly crippled firmware which do not support manual DNS, similar to all other Huawei home "gateway" products. B315s is not different.
3. It don't connect LTE, return the product, it must be faulty. I never heard any similar complain. B315s-936 from Telkom supports all SA networks (while B593 do not).

I have the B315 router from Telkom and my existing router is a Asus N66U.
That N66U looks like a good piece of kit !


I want to use my N66U for wifi as the range is better than the Huawei.

The Huawei modem/routers are best used as plain modems, with some other downstream device doing the heavy lifting as a full-featured router, Wireless Access point, firewall and Gigabit switch.


What I was planning to do is to DISABLE DHCP on the Asus and use the B593 as the "main" router with the N66U acting as a wireless access point. However, most of the posts I have seen online suggest doing just the opposite - using the N66U as the main router, disable DHCP on the B315 and connect B315 to the WAN port of the Asus.

My question is - why are the majority of posts suggesting the 2nd way of doing it and not my way?
I presume you mean B315, not B593 ?
Compared to a full-featured router and/or proper Wireless Access Point, the B593's Wi-Fi performance and firmware functionality (eg port-forwarding and firewall) are somewhat underwhelming. If/when you try to use it as such, you'll start to discover its limitations. Although the B315s has some plus points (eg 2100MHz TDD coverage and Gigabit LAN ports), it probably has similar limitations and the firmware seems even more dysfunctional (eg very limiting IP and DHCP options).
For that reason it generally works better to let the Huawei do what it does best - act as a 4G/LTE modem - and leave the routing and Wi-Fi functions to a dedicated router/WAP device.

No, you're not missing anything, you're quite right.
Using the Huawei B593/B315 upstream in this mode creates a "2-loop" scheme which requires different subnets on the WAN and LAN sides. While you certainly can use it in this way, it introduces 2 levels of firewall and 2 levels of port-forwarding.
That's why many folks prefer to use the B593's DMZ mode and place the downstream router in the DMZ. You still need different subnets, but that way everything gets forwarded directly to the downstream router with no firewall or NAT issues.

Awesome. Fully understand. I will put my Asus in dmz mode on the Huawei. I have already seen many features (that I use) of my Asus router lacking in the B315.
Only thing I will miss is Asus's built in free ddns, but luckily I have a server that is always on that can update the dynamic IP.

Oddly enough, that's one feature that actually works well on the B593 - a built-in DDNS update agent. It only supports certain DDNS services, but it certainly works. I don't know if the B315 has the same feature ... ?

Depending on how the Asus DDNS is configured, it may still work for you.
I have a similar scheme whereby my downstream router (corresponding to your Asus) updates a DNS entry with the B593's current WAN IP.

Unfortunately not :( I did try it and the Asus can only pickup the NAT IP given by the B315. It is clever enough though to give a warning that the DDNS IP address is invalid...

Of course, it won't work. You can not see from LAN side your upstream router's WAN interface. It is normal. Only special services on the Internet can reveal your real (Internet) IP address.

Well, with software this is possible as it can determine the public IP. @jcheek suggested that the Asus might be clever enough to determine the public IP, but unfortunately that isn't the case :(
