Hi,

I recently upgraded the firmware of the E220 usb modem to version 3.2.1.156 in order to get the modem working in Windows Vista. When I plug the modem in now, it starts installing the software however it reaches a point where I get a message "Error 1722: there is a problem with the windows installer package.. etc". It then starts to rollback the installation.

Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Thanks

Did you have an older version of VMC on your machine before? If so take look in program files and rename or delete the dir and try the install again.

Edit: The uninstall is probably a better first step, but sometimes not everything gets cleaned up properly, hence my suggestion.

Make sure the Firmware is up to date. 11.110.05.00.00

If all else fails, re-install Windows.

HMP

If all else fails flash your e220 with the Hauwei Mobile Partner software and bobs your uncle. it works like a dream with vista! i use it because the VMC has a lack of features. only thing with HMP you have to setup manual profiles but that is very easy. and once done no problems at all......

What lack of Features does VMC have?

It seemed the add/remove programs and delete program files folder did the trick. Thanks for the help!

It crashes my vista business box. It is some serious piece of bloat IMHO too - I mean 171 Mb unpacked? Please, - it's only a damn modem after all. I'm with Hummercellc on this - Mobile Partner is small, stable and reliable and does pretty much the same thing @ 10% of the installation size.

It works fine on my PC? And all the other PC's i have installed it on?

Yes Vodafone Mobile Connect is rather a large application, yet Vodafone Mobile Connect Lite performs the same functions, and is HALF the size of Mobile Partner.

I've been using VMCLite version 3 for close to a year now, and VMC for a few months and i have had absolutely no problems.

Plus that doesnt answer the question. I asked what lack of features does it have compared to Mobile Partner?

Mobile partner - UTPS11.002.03.04.03[E220] - is 8.57MB.
VMC Lite - VMCLite_E220_3_2_1_156_standard - is 26.6 Mb.

I just prefer MP, that's all I'm saying. It's stable for me, in Vista and XP, loads fast and works well. I use it when working on client's PC's - especially those on dial-up - plug in, wait 60 seconds, enter number and PIN, and I'm on the internet. The vodafone software is bloated and cumbersome IMO.

VMC - written by vodafone:(

After installation, HMP is 16Megs, and VMCLite 6Megs.

Has anyone confirmed the exact nature of this error message? Is it a problem that lies with the Windows Installer Package?

I have seen similar errors when you have an existing version of VMC already installed. For some reason the installer finds the files exist in program files during installation and executes them instead of using the newer files from the installer.

3.2.1.156 is a VMC dashboard version number, not a firmware version number.

Before fiddling updating dashboards, you need to upgrade to the Vista capable firmware.

I've seen this Windows Installer Error often. I've googled it and either restarted the Windows Installer service, or re-registered the service. It usually worked.

Other option would be to try install VMC 9.3.....but I'm guessing that will also give a Windows Installer error.

I got this exact same error 1722 yesterday while visiting a friend and trying to install VMC Lite 3.2.1 on his notebook.

I googled it and tried to re-register the msiexec.exe and Windows Install Service, but I couldn't fix it and I was in a hurry.

So I just installed VMC 9.3 and that worked just fine. Was able to connect.

If I had more time I would have eventually figured it out.

Thanks I'll try this next time.
