Hi does anyone have one of these 3G wifi mobile hotspots want to know how the battery life and performance.I want to use a cellc 3GB sim and use it in the device.

I'm using an E586 as I type.

The battery life is up to 4 hours, I believe, but I don't usually run it that long without plugging it into power.

The performance is pretty good, it supports up to 21mbps DL, not that you ever get that, the networks are too slow. But I have had 8mbps DL.

The wifi range is not too far, but considering that it is a battery operated device it is fine. It just can't replace a proper mains powered 3G router in the house.

The Huawei branded one that I have works with Cell C.

But I have a T-Mobile branded E583C that only works with VC and MTN, and not with Cell C (does not support 900MHz UMTS).

So make sure about the specs of the device that you are getting - at a minimum it needs to support UMTS 900MHz and 2100MHz.

Thanx man for the response is it easy to get a replacement battery for it i am thinking of getting it from Ebay seen it for around 110-130 USD

Any idea where the cheapest place to get one of these is? Either the E586 or E5830/2/6? What is the difference? Which of these are better? I'm hoping to find one of these for under R1k. There are some on bidorbuy and gumtree but that seems like a dodgy option.

Does anyone know if the E586 is compatible with 8ta? I only saw VC/MTN/Cell C mentioned.....

many thanks

If supports VC and MTN 3G, then also 8ta. Cell C is mentioned separeately as is uses mainly 900MHz band.

Hello there.

I am also currently using one of these devices (on 8ta, so its definitely compatible) with great internet speeds, but I am having issues with the wireless-lan connection. The maximum copy speed between my laptop and my desktop connected through usb to this device (both reputedly wireless-n devices) is around 1mb/s, a far cry less than I expected.

Has anyone else been having similar issues?

can you guys please comment on the approximate range of the wifi signal ? will it cover most area's within my house, or does it only work if device is near the E586 ?

I think you can expect a wifi radius of around 10-15m in perfect conditions. It's not designed to be a home AP, more of a personal AP. If you have walls etc, you might be lucky to get signal in the room next door but that's about it.

cool, thanks for the advice. i definately need a "home AP" so i went with the Huawei B683. 8ta is selling them for R1198 (which is a damn sight cheaper than everywhere else!)

I went even more cheapskate, Mikrotik RB751G with a USB dongle that I had lying around :D R600 or something in total.

Unfortunately I've already got a RB750G, although I guess I can always sell that and replace with the 751G, only thing is it's not portable, which I think the Huawie is.

I'm looking at getting one of these from Uniterm. At the moment I'm just using my Cellphone via USB, so I need to buy myself a suitable dongle as well.
