phoned data help line & they said tower is hsdpa enabled
any ideas anyone?

Define "3G Speeds" . You rarely get even close to the theoretical/advertised speeds of HSDPA [1.8 mbits/s]. If you are very lucky you might get the 800kbits/s type of speeds, if you're like me your HSDPA speed is basically in the 400kbits/s range [which generally looks and feels like 3G speeds on paper]

I'd say "real" 3G speeds are like 100-200 kbit/s on Vodacom . If you get anything faster [300+] then i'd wager it's HSDPA . Also it seems to be all about location and HSDPA speeds vary dramatically as far as i can tell. I can change to a different part of the city and get serious speeds, and to another part and it literally halves [all still on HSDPA].

Are you on pre-paid?

Won't you run a test on http://speed.vodacom.co.za/test and post your uplink and downlink speeds here?

Maybe run a few tests and see if you get an upload of greater than 64Kb/s, it could be that you're on a 3G profile on the network.

Download Speed: 370 kbps (46.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 55 kbps (6.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

so do i phone in to change my profile?

Thats about what I'm getting and I'm also on hsdpa, I must say though that before i changed over to hsdpa i was still on regular 3g and my speeds were painfully slow! it depends on your coverage in the area you in.

Download Speed: 381 kbps (47.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 56 kbps (7 KB/sec transfer rate)

those are the same speeds i got with my n70 3G

ive tested speeds today almost next to tower
3G
no hsdpa speeds
how do i know if towers r hsdpa enabled?
or do i have to get hsdpa enabled on sim?

All of Vodacom's 3G towers are HSDPA enabled and yes, you do have to subscribe to the HSDPA service or you will only get 3G speeds.

ok so i fone in?
155?
ask for?
enable hsdpa?

How do you mean, a person has to be subscribed to HSDPA?
I bought the card cash, have a 3G bundle 150MB, (Had it even before HSDPA came out)

My best speed is around 700kbps. full bars (so I assume I do get HSDPA speeds)
On my nokia N70 (3G) I do get around 300 kbps

I think that its only if you took the data card on contract, that you need to pay the higher rate for Hsdpa . . . pls confirm V3G

can anyone confirm?
the billing takes place auto according to your speed, doesnt it?

I downloaded the speedtest to my laptop yesterday. Ran the test a few times during the day. Last night, got error message that software expired (or something to that effect). Ran the test just now from the link again.

Does it 'delete' after a few times? I would like to run the test on a going basis.

If you've bought a HSDPA contract (R599/ Month, for 1 Gig, etc.), you should get HSDPA speeds (1800/384 max).

But if you've used only 3G before (with a 3G phone, for example) or are on pre-paid, the systems would automatically put you on the lower tariff and limit your speed to '3G' speeds (384/64).

This setting is applied to your mobile number, so if you want the HSDPA speeds, you need to call the call desk on 155 and get them to 'upgrade' you to HSDPA.

I've found the best way to check which speed-profile you're on is to run the Vodacom speed test and look at the up-link numbers as there should be less congestion in the up-link to confuse the results. If you get higher numbers than 64K in the up-link, say 100K+ you must be on HSDPA.

But if you constantly get just under 64K (55-57K), your on the 3G profile and can upgrade.

Both feverdj (370/55) and timvdwest (381/56) are getting full 3G speed, but obviously not HSDPA.

Make that call, you know it's the right thing to do!!

this is what i told the operator at 155. She said that she did not know f anything like this.
If i did not get speeds then i should fone back.

My connection speed has not gone over 380k/s for I don't know how long, so I thought maybe my profile is set to 3G.

I phoned 155, the guy informed me that it's nothing they can do, Autopage must check it.

I then phoned Autopage tech support, where I was informed I was on 3G profile.I then asked to be changed to HSDPA profile, and was then informed sorry, I am on HSDPA, since I have a HSDPA card. There's no setting they can check.

I assume this is the right route? Any other suggestions? Vodacom3G get's many many many many people bothering him, so anything else I can do?

Run the Vodacom speedtest on http://speed.vodacom.co.za/test and post here, specifically the upload speed.

Is this pre-paid or contract sim?

Last Result:
Download Speed: 363 kbps (45.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 58 kbps (7.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

It's contract.

I just realised the heading for this thread indicate the e620, my card is the Merlin U740. Shouldn't make a difference, though eh? ;)
