I'm using a Huawei branded E220, yes, but the firmware is

But mobile connect blocks both COM4 and COM5 when active (can't find the device if hyperterminal is using either port) and as already noted after mobile connect closes, it does not respond in ascii on COM5 (no character echo and no responses). (No urgency to fix this.)

I hadn't thought to try this. Yes, it works on COM5 before running mobile connect - requests and both immediate and delayed responses on the same session.Not sure why it's ignoring your requests on COM5, does it only happen after running Mobile Connect?
