Huawei E620 data card & USSD commands

Thanks ginggs! (I had confidence too!)

I'm using a Huawei branded E220, yes, but the firmware is
Manufacturer: huawei
Model: E220
Revision: 11.109.03.00.67
IMEI: 351827011243426
+GCAP: +CGSM,+FCLASS,+DS

Not sure why it's ignoring your requests on COM5, does it only happen after running Mobile Connect?
I hadn't thought to try this. Yes, it works on COM5 before running mobile connect - requests and both immediate and delayed responses on the same session.

But mobile connect blocks both COM4 and COM5 when active (can't find the device if hyperterminal is using either port) and as already noted after mobile connect closes, it does not respond in ascii on COM5 (no character echo and no responses). (No urgency to fix this.)

at^cpin works, thanks! - Is there a handy site with all these cellular AT commands explained?

You are lucky, that's the same firmware I've seen with the MTN branded ones. Have you tried installing the MTN software?
There are other Huawei branded E220s out there that came with firmware 076.11.07.106, which doesn't support a lot of the commands the 11.xxx firmware does.

I've gotten most of my info from The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) website.
If you're looking for something light to start with, try Technical Specification 27.007, the AT command set for User Equipment (UE).
The latest release will be down at the bottom of the page.

I've tried looking for it. Don't they have it on the MTN site?

Before I do something dumb, would it be the file "E220 HOSTB116D01SP03C67 (S. Africa MTN)" on this huawei page?

Thanks! I'm browsing that tech spec.

@MTN_DD: That page is for the E620 software, SecretCode is looking for the E220 software.

Seeing you have brought that page to my attention :D, it seems the file sizes for the driver and user manual have been mixed up, and the driver available to download there is version 11.13.04.06.08, but the current one is 11.13.04.08.08. Also, further down the page it says the latest version is 11.13.04.04.08!

@SecretCode: You can get the E220 software here, only 7MB instead of the 20MB version from Huawei.

I can live with this. Firmware to make the response come via the same COM port would be a minor improvement. An update to Huawei Mobile Connect to support USSD commands would be great. ;)

Joe
Also possibly the driver that is not separating the output from the USB port correctly. All I'm getting is OK and ^MODE:3,2 on COM4, on COM3 I only get OK. I swear this thing is possessed.

I believe that's the correct behaviour, the ^MODE:3,2 is an unsolicited response from the data card to say it's now in GPRS mode, it should only go to the UI COM port, not the modem COM port.

Getting back to USSD commands, they seem to be working correctly now with the 11.110.05.00.67 firmware for the E220.

Hi MTN_DD,

Any idea when this updated firmware will be available?

We're working on it but in the meantime whatever firmware is available we'll ensure that it's uploaded onto the update of the E620 MTN UI
@MTN_DD: Would you please check with Huawei when they plan to release the updated E620 firmware to fix the USSD commands?

Dear Clive, Jeremy

For the USSD commands, we just got some questions from Huawei R&D Dept. It is hard to communicate in the email. Can you arrange a meeting for discussing the issue? Then we can finish the USSD commands asap.

I will go to MTN with Leslie and Roger (Huawei Terminal Product Manager) in any time if you are free. How about this afternoon?

Thank you.
