Is this process applicable to the E220?
Device Manager says it's on COM5. I've set up hyperterminal to talk to COM5. It connects happily but I get nothing back. No echoed characters, no response at all even from "ati<enter>". Are there any important settings for the connection?
btw hyperterminal cannot connect when Huawei Mobile Connect is open. Presumably the COM port is in use and locked.

Yes, it works with the E220 as well.
Make sure you're using the COM port for the "3G PC UI Interface", not the "3G Application Interface". As far as settings go; bits per second: 115200, data bits: 8, parity: none, stop bits: 1, flow control: hardware.
That's correct, the Huawei Mobile Connect software communicates with the data card on the "3G PC UI Interface" port.

Anywho I hit the disconnect buton on the huwaei software and it showed I was disconnected. So what you're saying that I am connected even if I have disconnected??? That shouldnt be!
The ^DSFLOWRPT response from the data card contains all that information.
You're right it shouldn't, but check the settings in Windows for the "MTN F@stlink" dial-up connection, it might be set to re-dial on disconnect.

Got it (first step anyway) working now, but not the COM port your instructions suggest.
In Device Manager's Ports category my computer has "HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G PC UI Interface (COM5)" - but from COM5 I get nothing. The Modems category has "HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G Modem" and under Properties > Modem it says COM4. COM4 works in hyperterminal.

That is strange, I was able to talk to an E220 on the "3G PC UI Interface", unfortunately I only had the unit on loan for a short while so I cannot try again now.
You can use the modem COM port, but only while you're offline, otherwise you'll be told the port is already in use.
I had the same firmware on the E220 I tested.
Try a couple of times, and wait a few seconds for the response to come back. I found with the E220 I would sometimes get no response, sometime complete garbage and other times it would be fine.
This probably can be fixed with a firmware upgrade, like it was for the E620.

I suggest you find out what it is that's connecting you to the internet without your knowledge, it could be a setting in your browser or your email client, or even worse some malicious software installed on your computer.
Normally, yes, but I know there is a setting where you can disable the network connection icon in your system tray, so I guess it is possible for malicious software to do this as well. You can also check your automatic updates for Windows and your anti-virus software.
