Hulu and Afrihost

3Gb means you need a 10Mb line to get that. With a good account that doesn't shape as you will need near line speed all the time.

It says up to 3Gb per hour which as per their recommendations would be about 7Mbps for Super HD. Normal HD requires 5Mbps... Under their old algorithm I believe a 4Mbps connection could just about squeeze in 720p under ideal conditions or at the very least better than DVD quality which is 480p at a higher bitrate. Now it can't.

That's strange. I find Hulu to be the better service on Afrihost due to the stream quality.

I too am using UnoTelly...

What's your line speed?

I think different different DNS services work different for different streaming services. Some of the free ones are not too great at times though :(

Netflix hasn't been great for me either but I think that is due to a shift in their streaming algorithms...

Previously under Account Settings > Playback Settings it showed that their high setting would consume up to 2.3Gb of data per hour whereas now it shows 3Gb per hour. The low and medium settings have remained unchanged though which implies, to me at least, that my 4Mbps connection now keeps defaulting to medium quality whereas previously it could squeeze into the high category. This doesn't even take into account the various bitrates available at a given resolution...

Ever since they've changed this (happened sometime last week) I have never had the crisp images I previously had.

Hulu on the hand only streams in SD (480p) and HD (720p) which requires 1.5 and 3 Mbps respectively as per their website. They have a much simpler streaming algorithm which leads to better quality.

This is very good to know, and seems to make a lot of sense.

Also always a good idea to check how much bandwidth your services are pulling, like using Bitmeter OS. I find that gives an indication of where buffering comes in when you hit your line limit :(

Dude, I think you need to do some more testing.

I have been with various ISP's to try and resolve the problem (Hulu + buffering). I initially was using an Axxess account. (their 384 Fibre account.) It wouldn't work. I even tried a different capped account from Axxess. I then went over to Openweb, Tried various packages there - from Gold to capped, various line speeds as well. I eventually ended up with an Afrihost business package. I still get buffering on Hulu + - but it is a damn sight better than any of the other ISP's out there.

I still think that I need to "play around" with the quality settings to get it perfect. Your statement not to use Afrihost is not true. I found just the opposite. :wtf:

Thanks for sharing your experience. And love your status - we definitely have your back! ;)

I tested Netflix and Hulu on Afrihost as well as Webafrica: Afrihost is shocking! Buffering all the time and video quality is terrible. Webafrica streamed with no problem in HD on my 4 meg line.

We have many clients using both services, so I'm pretty sure they can work on our service. We'd need to check the specifics of your connection and why you're not getting a good result.

Drop me a PM, please :(

I have a similar issue that may be related. I'm using iMediashare to stream Wibi.tv movies. They use Amazon storage, the same as Netflix I believe.

I experienced a lot of buffering (every 10-20 seconds) on my normal capped Afrihost account, streaming SD content. Afer a few days of testing I got a capped trial account from Openweb (IS) and the same content now streams smoothly, with no buffering issues.

Strangely, I ran a ping plot on both accounts and neither has obvious issues - no spikes, packet loss or abnormally high pings. Obviously a tracert isn't the same as streaming content, so could this be a shaping issue from Afrihost?

If you're streaming doesn't have a P2P signature, then we won't shape or affect it in any way. But if you're on a normal Uncapped account (not business) and you're running torrents in the background, it can affect our built-in QoS which is trying to optimise performance while shaping. Have you tried running the stream clean with no other services as at all?

Like I posted on the last page on the Uncapped Business account feedback, I cannot get proper HD on Netflix or Hulu with Afrihost anymore. My AppleTV2 cannot even stream HD previews anymore as well. Speedtest is perfect (1000+kB/s) and my NZBs max the line out within seconds.

Poor.

This is really strange as I stream 720p (Hulu) perfectly on a 4Mbps Business account. Doesn't matter what time of day...

Does this happen during a specific time period and have you tried a wired connection?

With a 10Mbps connection and an Apple TV 2 you should be streaming perfectly because it will only stream in 720p due to hardware limitations.

Yeah, it's all wired on a 1Gb network. ATV2 was streaming HD in 720p no issues till a month ago, then it started stuttering. Hulu and Netflix worked fine and I got SuperHD 1080p with 5.1 digital on my PS3. Everything else works fine, just these services have degraded for me.

I'll leave it streaming some stuff tonight and then send the account details to Afriman tomorrow to look at. The rest of the line works 100%, no complaints on anything else.

Ok, so I've installed bitmeter and watched some Hulu and Netflix on my laptop.

Something strange is going on... I am consistently getting up to 750 kB/s which is 5.8Mbps on a 4Mbps line and package.

It's probably measuring all the traffic on the interface, which will include general network traffic.

That's pretty odd, because we still have many clients getting good performance on both :(

We do allow your line to burst through, so if your line is higher than your package rating it is possible.

BitMeter should only monitor internet traffic, as far as I know :(
It does monitor total network traffic as well. Anyway, after running some more tests I determined that I only had these speed spikes for the first 5mins or so after which it settled in at about 350 - 400kB/s.

Aaah, good to know :)

I have a 4Mbps line (which cannot be upgraded) and a 4Mbps account but I've had bursts in excess of 8Mbps for extended periods on HTTP downloads.

I'm not going to complain though...

What does your line sync at? Will you PM me the line number, I am seriously intrigued now :)
