Hydroponic Gardening DIY

Ok I am really having trouble with growing the bloody seedlings. Once they are about 3-4cm high they start wilting and pretty much die. This pa5rt of the growing process is done in a humidity dome. What else should I do or try as this is getting pretty frustrating.

Do they get enough sunlight?
I plant mine in "PEET" and give a little water everyday, with plenty sunlight, and 2 to 3 weeks later move them to planting bags or pots

I've been a bit bad and haven't attended to my garden in the last month or two. These tomatoes are incredibly hardy. They have survived despite little water and care and they just kept going. Going to make a nice tomatoe soup with them tonight :)
 
Mine are coming to an end. Last week i pureed and froze some for wintersoups and stews.
 
I've finally bought a ppm meter, I can't seem to find any simple explanation on how to use it.

This is how I've been using it, First I mix a fresh batch of nutrient mix (Starks), measure the ppm (1150 ppm). Then I check the ppm every two weeks if its higher I add more nutrient to the water, if it to high I add more water to bring it back to 1150. Is this basically correct?
 
You should check more regularly than 2 weeks.
Your ppm can shoot up in the first week as the nutrients get absorbed.

Try to maintain a 1150 ppm to avoid nutrient issues.
Lockout is a constant problem in systems where the ppm fluctuates too highly.
 
I just build a 5m x 5m x 2.5m greenhouse and I'm busy putting together the electronics to mange it all.

The only thing I can't seem to find an answer for, is if I need some form of protection from the "elements" inside the greenhouse, for the temperature and humidity sensors? Sure, one would use a Stevenson Screen outside, but what about inside? How do I protect the temp sensor from getting too hot inside the greenhouse, and effectively giving me an incorrect reading?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

So is everyones systems up and running... ?

I have been a bit slow this year and I'm only getting ready to go now. Have decided to upgrade my tomatoe reservoir to a 160L one instead of the 70L one I had previously which ultimately lead to the demise of some of my more delicate plant species. This year I'll be growing some coriander, basil, Pak choi and broccoli to try out something different. I don't have time to redo everything so it will be a challenge to get the "taller" reservoir to match up with my dutch bucket system which originally lead to my choice of "flat" reservoir tank.

I know we discussed this in the p[ast but where is the best place to look for float stop valve...? I went a bit mad at the end of last year constantly filling up over and over.

ll be adding some filters to my NFT system because the bloody hydroton got wedged into the draining pipes from time to time causing blockages and overflowing which was very irritating(If I had more time I would redesign it with the piping from Marley which was specifically designed for hydroponics but that will have to wait a bit).

Nope. Have a google and see how many vertical growing farms are out there. The ones in the pic I posted are a bit sideways. Mine will be "upright" for the most part. Last year I even tried growing them upside down with limited success.

Commercial farms are all horizontal stacked vertically?
 
huh? Those still look like plants growing out of horizontal openings to me?

Please elaborate what your understanding is of a horizontal versus a vertical growing system...? (Because we're clearly talking past each other)

I'm objecting to your pic showing a vertical pipe with plants attempting to grow upwards despite all exits of the pipe being sideways.

Horizontal being racks of horizontal earth bays where the plants grow upwards (vertical)

Unless you've got a light source coming from the side (why?) I really don't see why anyone would both with a different config.
