Still a little confused as to why you'd want vertical but to each his/her own I guess. To me this seems like the optimal approach:

So the world class hydro center that makes the news in a space-constrained city by saving space picked a design that isn't optimal i.t.o. space? Meanwhile they have enough resources to make a global lighting supplier custom roll LEDs tech just for that particular grow center?
If they can custom roll LED tech I'm pretty sure vertical PVC pipes are within their reach.....

Why are you being purposefully difficult about this..? You are dealing in ideals here and I am by no means a commercial farmer. What you may have missed is that there is a certain amount of fun involved in building and experimenting with different systems and ideas. You seem to be propagating the idea that there is only one best way to do something. I would love to see some of your systems that you have built and what you are growing in them.
How would you employ that design of yours in a 30cm X 30cm x 2m vertical space..? Because that's what is available to me..? And how can I build your system in a cost effective manner and where can I source the materials..?
I would probably put them 1.5 to 2 times further apart. Most plants don't like growing too closely together and it may limit their actually size and growth. It's very much trial and error though but I really like how he did it. You can of course easily just fill the tube with normal soil and plant as you normally would and just water from the top. It's a nice design and should be very cost effective too!

I'm not. You can try to grow crops upside-down for all I care. Not sure why I'm catching flak for pointing out something doesn't make sense though...

Have you actually Googled to see how many people are actually successfully growing in similar setups..?
There are many ways to skin a cat and as long as you understand the core concepts of hydroponics then you realise you can employ those concepts in many ways hence why you get bubbler/NFT/Dutch bucket systems. None of them are necessarily ideal but they work well enough for most of us in their respective rights.
If there is anything you are genuinely confused about then please do ask. This is a hobby more than anything else so I definitely don't claim to know everything.
Ok after a good night's sleep I'm giving this another go. Reading your last sentence from this post I guess your reasoning was for an indoor setup...? If that's the case then I agree completely. Having it setup vertically in a pipe doesn't make sense at all especially when you have to provide a light source.
However what I was referring to here was having the vertical growing setup outside. So the sun will be the light source which makes this setup feasible.

I know we discussed this in the p[ast but where is the best place to look for float stop valve...? I went a bit mad at the end of last year constantly filling up over and over.
Get a ball float valve from Builder's Supplies, Mica, etc. They're expensive though - upto R300! I brought one from "Farmer's supplies" for about R40. The "NWK" (Kooperasie) will also have some cheap ones.

Ball float valves work very well.
They newer ones are far cheaper and don't have the ball, they have a floating cup.
Smaller and cheaper.

this is actually a very good growing method surprisingly enough.
Go and read about tomatoes grown upside down and how well they fruit.

Yeah I did it last year and it worked relatively well. I also tried it with some strawberries which didn't work well at all.
So done and dusted with the vertical PVC pipe setup. Now just need to plant something.
EDIT: I keep on forgetting to ask. Anyone running some H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) in their systems...? From what I've read it helps with oxygenation of the water as well as keeping bacterial growth under control.

Absolutely. I have mine set to pump for a minute only which is more than enough. I watered it a little earlier and water penetration wasn't great but it will be better once the soil is wet all the way through. We will see how this works out but it's always fun trying different things.
