I would appreciate your help on the following:
using lettuce which is photodormant, thus requires light for germination?
rockwool (2 seeds per 'square'), plus 'home-made' humidity dome?
after seed has germinated(2/3 days) and there is visible plant growth, at what point do you transplant(num days)?
during this period before transplant, do you just water or water/nutrient mix?
would you add a grow media to your net pot?
must the roots be in contact with the water/nutrients in the channel when you first plant in net pot(from day 1)?
if not, what sort of hydration would the rockwool/plant require?

Ok, so first step was to "clean" the rockwool.
Some sites recommend boiling water, others not.
I just soaked them in water for a day and left them outside again to dry.
Then soaked them again in water and "planted" two seeds in each.
Put everything in a plastic container that acted as my humidity dome.
After a week, the tomato's looked very small, the 9 on the left.
The squash and cucumber looked very good.
So after 9 days I moved all the pods into my netpots and "secured" the rockwool with some clay balls.
These I then moved into the green house and my grow buckets.
Water is set to run every hour, but it is mostly to cool the plants.
I suspect it might be a bit early to transfer them outside, but lets see.

But both Mint Plants were looking very bad this morning, so I took one out to replant it. The wick was as dry as cork..
So I've cut a new piece of cloth into 3 strips, rather than one rolled up, untangled the roots, which seemed healthy (I'm a novice, so dunno) and not dry. Then placed them against the wicks, and filled up with the dirt stuff.
Should I replant the other one as well? They're just tiny herb plants I bought from the garden place.

Hi im new to this thread and live in the Johannesburg area, could anyone tell me where i can buy rockwool as i need it to insulate a fire box?

Ok, so now 2 weeks later and results vary hugely.
Squash is going like a boeing. I have changed the watering on them to go directly into the bucket now, as roots is in the water.
The tomato plants is going, but way slower. Only small roots hanging down, but not even close to the water.
The lettuce is really struggeling and looks to be haning on by a thread.
I tried a 2nd batch of germinating seeds inside the tunnel, but not a single stem.
Guess the tunnel is just way too hot, so will try a 3rd back inside the house again.

So the plants is really going well now.
The cucumber "Garden Sweet Burpless" has had a growth spurt and is now the largest.
I had to move some plants around to create more space.
The squash "Star 8021" is making flowers now. Really pretty.
Do I need to pollinate these manually or what? How do one do it?
The packet does mention it's a hybrid, so not sure?
The tomatoes is also starting to show how each type differ.
The "Money Maker" grows fast making a nice rootball.
The "Heinz 1370" does not grow fast, but the roots is starting to hit water now, but not making a rootball yet.
The "Star 9065" got a tall thick stem now, but just about no roots at the bottom growing towards the water.
I have tried to germinate a 2nd batch of "Black Beauty" eggplant, but no luck

New on the forum. Living in Krugersdorp
Running 10 Dutch / Bato buckets with perlite/coco coir mix as medium
Crop growing is Tomatoes / Cucumber / peppers / parsley / chives / ginger
Stunning growth, BUT I have constant dropping of pH, about 0,5 per day.
TDS stay relative stable at 600-700. I have to adjust pH every 2 days
Reservoir is 200L tank
I have automated the system with small PLC.
Current feeding cycle is 60 minutes/ Watering 5 miniutes
Now switched over to NUTRIFEED as per forum recommendation
Cannot say that pH has stabilized yet.
Will discard solution coming Satureday.

Would love to see some shots of your set-up.
My water tank holds about 100L.
Currently doing 200g of Nutrifeed every 2 weeks.
Consumption is now about 20L per day!!!
Not sure about PH or TDS
The cucumber plant is just about going nuts right now.
By the looks of it, I would have to build a steel frame to support it soon...
