Hyundai has a strange history of large SUVs in the South African market. Many years ago, its Terracan was considered to be a budget Land Cruiser alternative by seasoned off-roaders.

Despite its strange exterior design, the Terracan built a strong reputation and dedicated following among South African off-road enthusiasts.

Since the Terracan's departure, Hyundai has never featured a truly massive SUV, with proper three-row seating and luggage space. This is all set to change as the Korean company increases the production of its impressive new Palisade SUV, in right-hand drive.

Unlike the Kia Telluride, with which it shares a common platform, the Palisade is being configured for right-hand drive markets. That means it becomes a product candidate for Hyundai's South African vehicle portfolio.

Hyundai Palisade premium SUV coming to SA​

In a somewhat unexpected development, Hyundai Automotive SA is planning to launch the brand’s flagship SUV in South Africa next year. The 7/8-seater Palisade, which was previously only made in LHD guise, will slot in above the redesigned Santa Fe and effectively compete with the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes GLE and other premium SUVs.​


It’s reported that the right-hand-drive version of the Palisade was developed primarily for Australia and although Hyundai's South African subsidiary says the luxury SUV (which is built at the Ulsan plant in South Korea) will only be sold in small numbers, it’s confirmed to arrive in Mzansi in 2021.

Whereas Hyundai focused its SUV new-model introductions at the more affordable end of the market in the past year (such as the Venue and all-new Creta compact family cars), the Korean firm has big plans for its medium to large SUVs in 2021. Apart from the futuristically styled Tucson family car and the N3-platform Santa Fe, the Palisade will see Hyundai Automotive SA enter a segment that it hasn’t contested before.

When Hyundai releases the Palisade – its boldly styled 7-/8-seater flagship – in South Africa during the 2nd half of 2021, the Korean brand will take on luxury marques’ Premium SUVs with a product that not only looks the part, but offers superior practicality as a large family vehicle. We recently drove it in Sydney.

Summary

So, could the Palisade succeed in the sunny Republic, where its smaller Santa Fe sibling has struggled? Hyundai SA does not expect to sell many units of the newcomer, but this parking-bay- and rear-view-mirror-filling Hyundai offers rather a lot of what really matters to aspirational buyers; it’s one of the most purposeful looking, tastefully appointed and feature-rich large family vehicles money can buy.

Apart from the buying public's badge snobbery/brand allegiances, what obstacles will the Palisade need to overcome? For what it’s worth, although the all-wheel-driven 2.2-litre turbodiesel derivative has approach-, departure- and break-over angles of 18.5-, 21.2- and 16.3 degrees, its 203-mm ride height and shiny 20-inch wheels (on the top-spec versions) will limit the extent of its off-road capabilities.

And lastly, the Palisade does have a Trailer Stability Assist system and Trailer connecting guidelines on the rear-camera image (to assist the driver with trailer hitching), but its braked-trailer tow rating (2 200 kg) is lower than most of its rivals. That figure is based on the trailer-obsessed Australian market's standards of measurement for tow ratings, so let's rather wait for confirmation on the SA specification.

Of course, what the Palisade will cost remains to be seen, but suffice to say Hyundai might snaffle a few of the sales that the market’s luxury marques were hoping to get from their premium SUV offerings.

Three years ago, the Hyundai Palisade was revealed as the South Korean brand’s flagship SUV that slots in right above the Santa Fe. Initially, the model was exclusive to the North American market but the large crossover has now been introduced into South Africa.

The model added to the local configurator is the Hyundai Palisade R2,2 Elite 8AT AWD which is available in a seven- or eight-seater configuration. Both variants have been priced at R999 900. Included in this is a turbodiesel 2,2-litre four-pot with a power output of 142 kW and 440 N.m of torque. This gives it a 0-100 km/h time of 10,25 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h.

The Hyundai Palisade is a rather large product with its body boasting an overall length of 4 980 mm, width of 1 975 and height, including roof rails, of 1 750 mm. The 2 900 mm wheelbase allows the cabin to accommodate three rows of seats. A ground clearance of 203 mm affirms its SUV status.

Key standard features included in the Hyundai Palisade are electrically adjustable seats for the driver and passenger with heating and cooling functionalities as well adjustable lumbar supports. Climate control with vents for the second and third row is included as well. On the dashboard sits an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system connected to six speakers while the driver will have access to a seven-inch supervision TFT display. A partitioned glass roof accentuates a spacious cabin experience.

Hyundai has entered the local premium SUV game with its flagship 7/8 seater Palisade which is due to launch locally in early September 2021.

The Palisade faces off against stiff competition such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, to name a few, and slot in above the recently-launched and thoroughly revised Santa Fe.

The newcomer will be offered as either a 7-seater or an 8-seater if you wish (at no additional cost) and both derivatives will be powered by the familiar 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine found in the Santa Fe with 148 kW and 440 Nm of torque. Power is directed to an active on-demand all-wheel-drive system via an 8-speed automatic transmission. In terms of fuel efficiency, Hyundai claims 8.2 L/100km.

The new Hyundai Palisade will officially launch in South Africa in early September 2021.

Fresh from the launch of the refreshed Kona in July, Hyundai is once again on a model offensive as they're set to launch their new Palisade SUV in South Africa.

Though further details and specifications are yet to be confirmed closer to the launch, the brand-new offering will be launched locally on 2 September.

The SUV also shares a platform with Kia's Telluride.

A five-year or 150 000km manufacturer's warranty, Hyundai's trademark seven-year or 150 000km roadside assist and a seven-year or 105 000km service plan is standard across the range.

R1million pricetag?

According to the Hyundai SA website, pricing for the range starts from R999 900 and customers can choose between seven or eight-seater configurations.

Only one engine

Only a single-engine option will be available in South Africa - a turbodiesel 2.2-litre engine with a maximum output of 147kW and 440Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels an eight-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual shift mode.
