Hyundai has entered the local premium SUV game with its flagship 7/8 seater Palisade which is now on sale in South Africa.

The Palisade faces off against stiff competition such as the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, to name a few, and slots in above the recently-launched and thoroughly revised Santa Fe.

The newcomer will be offered as either a 7-seater or an 8-seater if you wish (at no additional cost) and both derivatives will be powered by the familiar 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine found in the Santa Fe with 148 kW and 440 Nm of torque. Power is directed to an active on-demand all-wheel-drive system via an 8-speed automatic transmission. In terms of fuel efficiency, Hyundai claims 8.2 L/100km.

Hyundai sells the Palisade with its 5-year/150 000 km vehicle warranty and 7-year/200 000 km drivetrain warranty. A 7-year 105 000 km service plan is also standard, which can be swapped or upgraded for a maintenance plan if desired.

Summary

The Hyundai Palisade ticks the practicality and value for money box at a time when SUVs of this size are well over R1 million and creeping towards R1.5 million once you add equivalent options. Its choice of seating arrangement will find favour with big families that don’t want to buy a van for the school run. It has some off-road credentials but best kept to light use rather than diving deep into the Kalahari sand or overlanding trips to the Drakensberg.

Its engine could do with more power and torque considering its segment placing and the weight it’s likely to carry come holiday time but it’s not so bad that you’ll struggle to get up a slight incline on the N1 when loaded.

Pricing has been set at R1 million, which may sound like a lot but actually represents good value at this point in time. What time will tell though is if buyers at this end of the market will choose the Korean option over the traditional British and German stalwarts?

The Hyundai Palisade is being launched in South Africa this week and it’s by far the most upmarket product that the Korean brand has ever launched here.

Larger than the Santa Fe and boasting luxurious three-row seating, the Hyundai Palisade will go up against vehicles like the Volvo XC90, Volkswagen Touareg and Audi Q7.

Although it is by far the most expensive Hyundai ever launched in SA, with a price tag of R999 900, Hyundai still believes that it is offering great value in relation to the competition. For the record the Volvo XC90 and Volkswagen Touareg both start just north of R1.2 million.

The Hyundai Palisade is powered by Hyundai’s 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine, which produces 142kW at 3800rpm and 440Nm from 1750-2750rpm. It’s paired with an all-wheel drive system and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Buyers can choose between 7-seat and 8-seat versions, both at the same aforementioned price, and the former comes with two individual second row seats, with a walkway between them. Hyundai has thought long and hard about occupant convenience, and to that end it has seven USB charging points covering all three rows, as well as separate rear climate control, a rear door blind and conversation mirror. There’s also a quiet mode that drops the volume of the rear speakers so that children can sleep while the parents still listen to music upfront.

How it drives

Providing the power is a 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine (the same one found in the Santa Fe) with maximum outputs of 142kW and 440Nm, directed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai claims a fuel consumption of 8.2-litres/100km, though using the various driving modes (Eco, Smart, Sport) used during launch, a 7.9 figure was the ballpark.

One of the standout cues about the drive is how impressive such a large body handles on the road. That is largely down to the beefy 20-inch wheels, triple reinforced chassis and improved suspension that translates to virtually no hint of body roll and agile handling more akin to the recently launched Kona.

The Koreans have refined their range of vehicles drastically since the days of the Tiburon. From the mesmeric front grille to the continuous LED and daytime running lights, the Palisade is an option one simply cannot ignore because plenty of factors make financial sense to the buyer.

If you didn't know, Hyundai's comprehensive seven-year or 200 000km warranty, seven-year or 105 000km service plan, and seven-year or 150 000km roadside assistance continues to be offered as standard.

DRIVEN: Hyundai Palisade R2,2 Elite 8AT AWD

On the open road, though, I felt such a considerable investment deserved a bit more in the way of overtaking power. You can definitely feel that, at 1 952 kg kerb weight, the Palisade weighs 142 kg more than the Santa Fe, and I would have liked extra grunt for overtaking. On balance, though, performance is quite impressive given the power-to-weight ratio, and the 0-100 km/h of 10,5 seconds is reasonable, as is the claimed top speed of 190 km/h.

Just before we leave the subject of the engine chosen for our market, I would love to experience one with a V6 engine, to give the car just a little more charisma. Unfortunately a V6 diesel isn’t available in the range, but in Australia you can order 3,8-litre V6 petrol version. Of course this one would be seriously heavy on fuel, whereas the SA-spec Hyundai Palisade with its 2,2-litre power-plant will easily return overall consumption figures in the 9,0 L/100 km range. Hyundai claims an overall figure 8,2 L/100 km, which you will probably achieve on longer trips encompassing steady 120 km/h cruising.

All in all then, a very impressive vehicle, but definitely not cheap at R999 990. But if you look at what it offers in terms of space, features that are all inclusive of the asking price, and an appearance that is definitely imposing, then yes, the Hyundai Palisade can claim to have a special place in our motoring terrain. Hyundai realise this is not going to be a volume seller, and estimate they will probably sell about 25 units each month.

DRIVEN: Hyundai Palisade is a very worthy large SUV contender

If you’re in the market for a seven/eight seater that’s comfortable, economical, safe, with a premium interior and an outstanding warranty you will be doing yourself a dis-service if you don’t look at the Hyundai Palisade.

Here’s hoping that with Covid-19 realities and re-alignment it’s not just the badge on the keyring that counts.

In summary

Overall, we are completely smitten with the Palisade. It completely blew away the expectation that it would be wafty, ungainly, and a nightmare to live with in Johannesburg considering its size with all this traffic around us, but man, oh man, what a breeze it is to drive and live with.

At R1.0 million, it's challenging to say that this is the perfect car for large South African families, but when you consider the amount of value and engineering offered here, it's a legitimate bargain as far as big SUVs go. If you're in the market for something big with a captivating character and loads of driving fun, you won't be disappointed with this offering from South Korea.

All Hyundai Palisade models come with a seven-year or 200 000km warranty and a seven-year or 105 000km service plan. They also come with roadside assistance for seven years or 150 000km.

Looks good, but for a little more you could get a 6 cylinder touareg.... And seeing it I would never guess it costs a bar.
