Hi guys,

Ok, so today i decided to upgrade my vista to win7, and i have 2 hdd's, one with xp(as a backup) and the other with vista. the 1st prob was that the xp hdd wouldn't load, so i formatted and installed a new windows on that hdd, so it installed fine, now i get into my new xp and i cant access my portable hdd( i even tried take ownership and that doesn't work), and my portable has all the drivers and the new Win7 on it. another problem is that now the vista drive wont boot anymore, it doesn't give me the option to run either xp or vista, it just goes straight to xp.

dont ask why i went through all this trouble, can some1 just help a fellow MyBB member.
Thanks.

What doe it say when you try to access it? Try import the disk into the new OS. Computer management > Disk Management > right click disk > import.

I've seen before that portable hdd's dont want to be read in xp but for some reason they work in vista.

Dont you have a copy of vista you can install over the xp to temporarily access the hdd?

seems i worry too much but i never realised that the xp had ultra iso installed automatically, so i just mounted the image of Win7 and vwala, i have Win7. But just one question, how do i remove security of portable hdd so that any1 with a computer can access, because i gave it to my friend and he couldn't access the folders but i could. thanks for the info, i'll keep that in mind the next time sth goes wrong.

This is in XP:

Open explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> Untick 'use simple file sharing' -> Apply.

Right click removable drive -> sharing and security -> security -> advanced -> make sure that there is a user called 'everyone' that has full permissions/access -> tick 'replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects' -> apply

And voila hopefully that works

ok, i got another problem, it seems that when i restart my backup xp my windows 7 isn't loading anymore, i dont even get an option to choose which one i want, i went to the msconfig but win7 ultimate wasnt there, so what must i do, please help somebody i need my pc.

You are pretty screwed in actual fact. It will take me the rest of today to explain to you how to fix your stuff up.

Just google for Windows Boot Loader configurations and steps to create a proper boot loader, there are many free apps available.

You can also try this guide from Acronis to rebuild your boot process:

Just use your logic when doing it though, have the correct drives connected etc.
