I hate ITunes

Nothing personal honest; occasionally the problem can be wider than the software ;)

Are.. you... calling... me... fat ? :D

Seriously... in my defense... there was an issue at the time regarding the update that I happened to apply. A number of tagging issues like mine... there was a soon released patch or updated update... only for the PC iTunes mind you. Engineered to "persuade" me to go Mac I am sure.

I use Tagscanner for my mp3 tagging 1by1 player and XMPlay. I keep it simple. No more poisoned wicked witch apples for me.

Lol... For me ITunes does what I need it to do, coupled with tuneup for tags I'm content.
Well whatever way you finally end up on a Mac is positive...

My favorite recent feature is AirPlay to my Zepplin Air speakers, and all time favorite would be ITunes store (more recently iTunes U).
For these features there are not IMO any decent alternatives,

The Mail & Guardian will surely disagree with that statement ! :D

I didn't like it at first, but now that IOS 5.1 has come out, its indispensible when transferring files to and from iPad to PC. I uploaded some Word files to the notepad and was able to copy and paste them to Google Docs without buying any fancy apps. Seeing it manages the iPad quite well, has numerous nifty functions that you have to explore to learn, I think you should re-look at iTunes in a positive way and you may find that it quite a well-designed piece of software.

The app mentioned above, tune-up is also really good

This morning iTunes managed to delete half of the apps on my iPad and i didn't have time to fix it. Luckily they were all free ones but I can't even figure out why. Something about not being authorised on the PC...but the rest of the apps were fine. I have a sneaking feeling I'm using 2 separate accounts somehow and it deleted one batch. Thanks Apple guys! And thanks for making the South African iTunes store a barren wasteland.

That's Vodacoms fault ...
Or RIM ...
Or the government ...

Can't recall exactly - but it's not Apple!

Why do you hang out in the iPhone forum just to troll? I know the iPad isn't perfect, it's a bloody sight nicer to use than any Android tablet though.

I was correcting you?
Unless I'm wrong?

Is it Apple's fault or someone else?
And if it is someone elses fault - am I right or trolling?

I belong here more than Android section because I have the iPad and can speak from experience. Isn't that why you all moaned initially?

Similar thing happened to me a week ago. Opened my iphone (it was not plugged in or docked at the time) and all my apps were gone, except the standard ones that come with the phone! Imagine my surprise. Well, actually I karked myself. It was as if the phone reset to default factory settings. Did a restore from itunes, but still had to set up the different apps again e.g. Dropbox.

I know the iPad isn't perfect, it's a bloody sight nicer to use than any Android tablet though.

True that. :)

Apple? The FBP requires all developers of entertainment apps to register (for a fee) and then pay R1500 per submission. Why do you think there is just so much more available on the Kenyan site?

Do you honestly believe Apple doesn't want our money? :)

EDIT - btw I'm using three different accounts and haven't suffered from apps disappearing. Have you tried re-authorising the PC for each account?

MEH is all I have to say about that, MEH AGAIN.

This argument may be extended to iTunes which, based on Hall’s argument, could be exempt from FPB requirements by hosting content servers in South Africa with suitably licensed ISPs.

Apple, you want our money, all you need to do is set up a local hosting server and it's yours.

Oh and also, MEH @ Videos for not playing AVI. Who uses MP4 these days?

I'm gonna set up a US account later on, I think that'll be easiest way of doing it.

MEHHH

Why question containers, surely by implication you meant to refer to codecs...?

No... All the AVI files I have don't work without converting them to MP4. It's a container issue surely?

They have to be h.264/AAC to work I think. However there are 3rd party video players that play pretty much anything, like "it's playing".

AVI is a container for multiple codecs -- many of these codecs are not natively supported by OSX or iOS, where-in will lie your problem ultimately.

Your issue is a two fold one: container & codec.
Basically iTunes only supports a few of its own container formats and certain codecs (typically only iTunes store media); it however does use QuickTime to play a few of the older formats (where-in lies a possible solution for you);

The are a few known workarounds to conversion that can be tried (perian must be installed first):
1. Change some file attributes using setFile http://www.jedi.be/blog/2008/11/07/adding-avi-mkv-xvid-to-itunes-it-works/
2. Combination of changing attributes, embedding into an alternative container or full conversion http://www.aroona.net/VideoDrive/Home.html

For those that require full conversion, you can try Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip.

Note: there are known issues with streaming to both Apple TV and using home sharing to iDevices.

Dolby, the problem is that it tends to be all negative... Is there really nothing you like about your iPad experience?
