I hate ITunes

I meant writing to tags with something like MP3Tag. Not sure how the compulation tag works (other than via iTunes), but apparently it is possible.

I don't let iTunes manage my library, I keep everything on an f: drive - and backup the iTunes data files on c: every now and then. In case of format or crash it's a breeze to reinstall everything.
 
Like photos I've taken with a camera ;)

No photo section, because that's what iPhoto is for, or it's Microsoft equivalent on Windows. iCloud will move the photo from the idevices to a folder on your Wndows PC, on a Mac it moves between the related Apps (iLife, iWork, ...)

Without starting another fight - I really do find that illogical :/

Every other 'library' program that does streaming, sharing etc has media divided into music, movies and photos.

So to stream and get media to my iPad (on my local network), my options are :

iTunes : music 100% - but convert 1,500 movies to iformat
Boxee : no music and no photos - but 1,500 movies work in the correct formats
iPhoto : to view photos

Is iPhoto free?

No, you can select a folder/s containing your photo's in that you want to sync with your iPad. They just don't display in iTunes like music and video's do in their own category but when your iPad is connected you have the option of selecting a number of categories and editing what you want to sync.

Or am not understanding the issue you having...??

EDIT: There 2 programs I would recommend for video playback and streaming, Airvideo which will stream your movies over the home network. It requires a small app installed on the host pc and on the iPad, very easy to use and very effective.

Then there is AVPlayer HD where you can transfer movie files to the Pad via iTunes and AVPlayer and play them in their native format so no tedious conversion process. Quite a few formats supported.

Both apps are paid apps though...

That is the issue I'm having ... why would they not let you see it?
So when I add them to iTunes (as I don't see it), it's only in order to sync to another iDevice?
There's no way of using iTunes to view the photos?

That's like saying when you send a mail, click attach and select the file - you won't see it, but it's there

Thats because macs come with a photo centric app built in which does a much better job of handling photo centric tasks.

Yeah it is a bit peculiar.

The most efficient way, for me anyway, is to create a folder specifically for photo's I want syncing to the iPad. All one's editing and viewing gets done in Windows.
 
Or you can just get an app which'll do it.

At least it isn't just me :/

I'd do the same thing when I initially got the iPad ; copy to a specific folder and only sync that folder. But it'd be easier if I loaded ALL my photo's in iTunes and selected what to sync, rather than copying OUT of the main photo folder.

For a company that ease of use, future technology, end user experience and a full media system - I really do find them backwards sometimes. They need to redesign iTunes to have all media - and they need to make it transcode to iFormats when streaming.

It's BS that a user has to spend so much time when buying an Apple. If I buy a Mac, I'll be converting and changing everything to the Apple way for the first few months!

iTunes started out as just an mp3 player and store and slowly grew to handle all the other types of media you can buy from them. Photo's have never been an integral part of it because you can't buy pictures from them and there has always been a much better program in the form of iPhoto installed right next to it.

Admittedly the streaming of photo's for windows users is a bit of an oversight from apple, but then microsoft doesn't do a good job optimizing office for mac so i guess both companies don't want you to get the perfect experience on each others products.
 
But Zyzzyva - it's almost 2012 and they should'vet redesigned iTunes to handle everything by now, just like other programs. I thought the initial idea was that iTunes be the 'hub' of everything? One program to handle all media?

It doesn't need to edit photos or anything - just to be able to add them and browse them from a central point.

Apple is around today of two things - one is the bailout from Microsoft and the second, more important reason is that iTunes was allowed on the Windows platform. Steve was initially against it but luckily his employees convinced him otherwise.

The move allowed the massive Windows market to buy/use the iPod/iTunes start getting the 'i' products out there. Having iTunes that Windows users can use as a 'hub' for their media may do the same and convince them to go the Apple route.

iTunes had the opposite effect on me, it convinced me to stay the hell away from Apple :)

I hear where you are coming from, they should add the ability especially for windows users who don't have iPhoto, but from a mac users perspective it just isn't needed.

Macs are fantastic devices, but the big oversight if there is one is iTunes, the program needs a completely rewrite considering its essentially the store for all the content apple sells. On mac it isn't bad - its passable even - but it could be great, and its not.
