I recently applied for telkom to activate adsl on my landline. However they now tell me they can't because there aren't any more lines available!!! You'd think with slipping adsl customer numbers they would do some upgrades, so that the few people who still actually wants to do business with them, CAN DO IT!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Wait a month or two and try again. Hopefully this will be resolved when they are finished with all the network speed upgrades.

That is if we get the network speed upgrades, it looks like telkom is playing the "stalling, stalling, stalling... not gona happen... oh look SA is in the stoneage with their internet speeds" game! So, won't be holding my breath! Plus I want internet now dammit :D

1. Phone back immediately.

2. Insist on an ORDER number (not a ref number, there's a difference).

3. Ask them if there is a project linked to your request to install additional DSLAM ports.

4. Ask them for the date on which additional ports will be available on the DSLAM.

5. Phone back every day, twice a day and ask for a progress report (make sure it is from a Telkom line so that it is a free call!!).

I had a similar issue when I applied for ADSL on my line in April. I called Telkom, spoke to some lady who said "there are no ports available, please try in 30 days". I called Telkom back immediately after that and the lady I spoke to told me that there were 2700 free ports available.

So definitely call back and if that doesnt work, call back again. Dont trust telkom!!!

Thanks for the tips, alas I don't think it will help.
1. I phoned them this morning
2. I think I should do the order number thing, so the number they sent me was a reference number most probably you say?
3. They say they don't know because the person who sent me a letter said the infrastructure does not support it. Phoning telkom, they say that is incorrect there are just no ports available,
and they don't know when ports will be available because this is a private person who sent me this letter? :/
4. He says he will phone me back in two week's time to update me on progress?
5. I think I should phone daily and bug the crap out of them, would that work?

Thanks again for the tips :D

Mmmh... I think I will phone back right now! Trust telkom? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA NOT IN THIS LIFETIME :D People can say what they want, but telkom is only used because we don't actually have another choice!

@Bleep: where is this service required? Town/city/suburb? Or the first 6 numbers of your telephone number (011-234xxxx) - do not give the last 4 digits!!

Phoned again they say there are no ports available, it might even take years :/ YEARS!!!!! Geez, I feel like getting overdramatic...<Cue dramatic music... or Darth Vader theme song>

I got the exact same problem applied around a month and a half ago...
every time i call telkom all they gotta say is it will take 30-40 days :wtf:
Ask why there's no ports available and they doing upgrades

If Telkom is so kuk, go for iBurst or 3G. Makes waiting for ADSL much more tolerable.

Remember Telkom are also in a freeze period in order to serve King Blatter.

They told me it will take 31 days before they can give me a date for when it will be finished, so I asked her if they will let me know on <date after 31 days> and she said no, like I'm being an idiot :/
The other day when I phoned they said it should be ready 23 November 2010, the telkom shop told me it can take a couple of years! sigh...

Isn't Iburst crappy expensive and slow?

I just want to play games online! Is that so much to ask for?! *Raises hand to the sky and curses Telkom*

LAME, STOP YOUR COMPLAINING.

I had to wait an entire year before I got my ADSL from them, I had to check in every month to see whether any lines were available.

because there's no availability, dont you think it shows ADSL is actually on the increase? all this "eat as much as you can" hype makes everyone now want to get on the train. after all the tv ad implies they'll shoot you if you dont :) as for the taking years story, i guess maybe if you're out on a plot somewhere with less than 5 neighbors. you see there is a physical limit on how far away the DSLAM can be from you. they'r not gonna invest in infratructure if they cant make a return on it.
as said the freeze: well Sunday's the last game and by Monday most of the lazy ones who dont want to do their jobs properly will probably be on leave. hopefully you'll have better luck getting hold of someone who follows the correct procedure then. remember, you want an order number, not a reference

Guy I live in Pietermaritzburg, Capital of KZN with a population of around 500 000. Less than an hours drive away from Durban. I don't live on a "plot somewhere with less than 5 neighbors";)
