I just quit smoking!

Lino dude you need to chow food.

I would suggest getting some fat burners man, keep your appetite down. The biggest trick in my opinion to quitting is the first 2 weeks and those 2 weeks you need to keep the cravings at bay with food.

Fat burners are good because when you crave it feels like you want everything in sight :D.

Aunts car is here, very very bad news! I don't think I can control this much longer while being on cold turkey!

Dunno what it is mate... Beer and cigs go together like nothing else..

Ciggie and coffie... Ciggie after nookie... Ciggie after chocolate (esp dark) ciggie while holding a cold one. Somethings just work so much better, when combined. ;)

Cigarette with coffee comes close :o Was a tradition at campus..

@ Linoman, stay strong dude. I desperately need the inspiration. I've got 4 smokes left and then I'm quitting too. I'm also going cold turkey. I think if its tough then the rewards are greater but I'm stressing so don't faulter. I'm focusing on saving the 1K a month that I burn away.

The quit spray from any pharmacy is magic - combine that with regular chewing gum and it kills any craving - got me off 2 pack a day and smoke free 8 years now!

GL - it is worth it.

Another good reason - if in China!

http://www.news24.com/Content/SciTe...-2009-08-25/Smoker_stops_worlds_fastest_train

Beijing - The world's fastest train hit its first speed bump in the form of a disobedient smoker less than a week after it began running in southern China.

A cigarette triggered an alarm that forced a two-and-a-half hour stoppage, nearly as long as the train takes to cover the 1 100km distance between Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, and the central city of Wuhan.

Managers of the bullet train, which debuted on Saturday, were unable to catch the smoker who fled the scene before the alarm sounded, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.

"Smoking is strictly forbidden on the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed train, even in the toilet," a spokesperson with the Guangzhou Railway Group Corporation was quoted as saying. "It could trigger the alarm and even cause equipment failures."

The train was in the Guangzhou rail station when it was delayed and had not yet begun its 350km/h journey, Xinhua added.

So to be honest this didn't last long, with New Years, thought of starting my first official job etc. However I started it again last night, and so far still have not had a smoke!

Was going to pop in and say well done. Then saw this. Don't give in again Lino.

Saw my old man this weekend as he was down on holiday. Triple bypass, numerous stents etc he still persisted with smoking even with the specialist's insistence that he stops.

Two months back he was rushed to hospital again. Apparently it was nothing too serious. The specialist kept him in ICU for five days anyway as it meant he could not smoke. He was that serious about him quitting. My dad eventually conceded and decided to call it quits. He is using those Nicorette gums. He said within a week he could breath without wheezing, walk without puffing, and no waking in the morning coughing. Visiting him was a pleasure as it meant we did not have to go outside to get fresh air every so often.

Guys, if you can give this habit a boot while you are still young, do it! Seriously, you all know I am anti smoking but I have had "second hand" experience of it's effects. It is not nice.

Try some of that gum, man. Apparently they say you need it for six weeks. Never thought my old man would do it but he is 2 months in! Still on the gum though but down to two pieces a day, which is like two smokes, after being a 30+ per day smoker.

At least with the gum you are only getting the nicotene and not the tar and other toxins.

That gum works to get you off smoking but i would not suggest it for 6 weeks.

Go read up about the gum lance, it ain't that pretty dude. Loads of side effects.

Are you sure that is correct sounds a bit strange that they keep someone in ICU, i wonder how he got that right. Must have lied to medical aid big time. 5 days must have cost a fortune and cost the medical aid a fortune, kinda like claiming more than you should when someone breaks into your house. What did you call that again lance?

...and smoking is good for you? Have you read the side effects on a box of cigarettes? I'm sure it mentions death! ;) And in saying that have you even read the side effects on a box of over the counter medication? They cover themselves for every possibility.

And as for the actually side effects of this product, they do not sound too bad :

If the gum is chewed too fast, the patient may experience effects similar to those experienced when inhaling cigarette smoke for the first time, or when smoking too fast. These effects include light-headedness, nausea and vomiting, throat and mouth irritation, hiccups and stomach upset. Most of these effects are controlled by chewing more slowly. See instructions above. Some other effects sometimes seen – particularly during the first few days of using gum – include mouth ulcers, jaw muscle ache, headache, heart palpitations and more than the usual amount of saliva in the mouth. There are other side-effects which have been infrequently reported with the use of Nicorette®. Patients should be encouraged to discuss any questions, and to report any disturbing side effects.

And from the Nicorette website :

Dosage should be gradually reduced over time. Recommended period of use is at least 12 weeks. The entire range of Nicorette products is available either on prescription or over the counter via pharmacies all over South Africa.

So it seems six weeks may in fact not be sufficient!

I know for a fact my dad won't tell me the truth about how serious it really was..... The truth was probably that he needed to be admitted to ICU at first but he then kept insisting he was ready to go. The specialist then joked and said they'd keep him longer so he could not smoke. That was probably how it played out but it does not change the facts of the seriousness of the specialist insisting he stops smoking so pointless arguing as the fact remains.

I did not say smoking is better than the gum did i?

I said both are bad, obviously the gum is better but he should get off it ASAP. Go read the side effects before commenting any further i suggest.

Well I did the gum thing in the past, sad thing it doesn't kill the addiction. I fear cold turkey will be best way for me!
