I just quit smoking!

Had enough of coughing lungs, the smell of everything like smoke.

Congrats, me too...

I just made a decision that I had enough. However every time I feel a craving I shall post here!

*Next three days will be hell*

I stopped, cold duck! No pills, e cigs etc

I'm on my third day now. The real problem for me will be trying to have a drink (especially a nice frosty beer) without a cigarette in my hand.

I have a theory: If I have to spend any time at all listening to self-help tapes or reading the books, all it does is remind me about nicotine. Rather just do something to distract yourself. (Not eat though :) )

Those tapes are boring, six hours worth of them.
I really didn't want to smoke after hearing them.

You only have to quit right at the end, then don't worry about them again.

To save u six hours...
What they do is basically convince you that you're not giving up anything by quitting, that you're actually gaining something.

When you use the willpower method its a constant battle all the time which is why most people fail at that one.

Sounds simple and it is. :)

I am of the opinion that we are addicted to not only nicotine but to MAOI's which are found in the tobacco alkaloids. This is why some drugs such as Zyban are so effective in helping some smokers quit because these are Serotonin meddlers and why so many people fail quitting time after time and resume the habit months/years down the line. Some of us are more hooked than others and our dependence on tobacco (nicotine +MAOI) will vary. I don't believe it is willpower alone for many people. For some, yes. The lucky ones, who are merely nicotine dependent and not high MAOI susceptable. It's all in the Genes. There is evidence out on the internets that people who just take nicotine subsitutes FAIL eventually that's why most smoking cessation aids that offer nicotine replacement don't work long because the Tobacco alkaloid of some sort is missing.

Congrats Lino. Hope its permanent.

I was wondering whether that was intentional or not.:D

This seems to be a common theme among smokers attempting to quit. Must be one hell of a strong associations between beer & cigs.

There isn't one way for everyone.

No nicotine is the biggest factor in everyone.

It is the sole reason you crave a cigi. As alf says there is not one way of quitting for everyone and in fact you do not need substitutes, if you do you will not quit.

You need to say to yourself, this tastes kuk, makes me stink and costs me money WTF is the point? Then you need to give yourself 2 weeks to get off nicotine and the rest of your life to handle the cravings and your body feeling hungry all the time.

That is the the worst for me is i am always friggen hungry. Main ingredient for quitting is your mind.

Dunno what it is mate... Beer and cigs go together like nothing else..

Yup, I had 7 of those days in the last month.
Beer, braai, friends. :) Pretty much all of them smoke.
Probably not the best time of year to quit, but then again it never is.

My gf did help me get through it, it does get easier after a few hours.
You just tell tell yourself that you're glad that you don't have to breathe that kuk smoke into your lungs anymore.

And don't lecture the smokers, :) you know for a fact that every one of them wants to quit, but they'll make up reasons not to.

Let them quit on their owm, nobody can make you quit.
(maybe an xray or something in the Dr's office will help. ;) )

Do you still smoke occasionally?

Do you still smoke occasionally?

Nope.
I smelled a pack of my cousins ciggies at the first braai.
Haven't had a drag since I put out that final smoke.
(and threw away R250 worth of smokes and 3 stinky ashtrays)

Frikkin hope I never take another drag again, I do think about it - but I ain't gonna do it.

Yes well it has been almost 9 hours now and I want to have a cig! In fact I feel OFHOI()&#)#&)#$&)%& for one!

Well I got a lift home, instead of using my car. "Thus I can't go and buy myself some cigs"

*Goes off crying*
