i just recently bought a computer (which i think was a pretty good deal though i dont know anything about them)
2.2ghz core 2 duo, 2gb ram... good for the first comp i buy myself! (im a student)

problem is, the bloody thing didnt come with a graphics card.

any suggestions as to which cards are good around the R1000-R1500 range? i know R1500 isnt much for a graphics card, but im a student and have no cash and the on-board graphics are utter crap

i dont feel comfortable with second hand stuff, specially not electronics because i need my warranties =)

thanks guys..

Well I can get u a Geforce 8600GT 512MB brand new for R1225 and the MSI ATI 2900XT 512MB for R1490

thats cool... the thing is that i'll only be able to buy it mid-feb as im still trying to recover from shelling out all my dimes for this computer...
also, and no disrespect intended, im looking at buying from a local shop so that i can just return it to them if something goes wrong.

thanks though

I slotted in my new Sapphire Radeon HD3870 last night and couldn't be happier. Ran COD4 full graphics and it ran without so much as a stutter. Will try Crysis today. Got a 6000 something score on 3D Mark but my HDD was badly fragmented. will try it again today.

I would not recomend the 8600 GT..or the 8500 GT or the 8400 GT...

thanks, can you tell me why though? i've no clue on what is good/bad so it would really help me if i can get some sort of idea on why those arent recommended...

Save a little more and get the HD3850, WELL worth it!!

I've got a 8600 GT playing Crysis on it; no problems :D

HD3850 = R1750 from Prophecy, about the cheapest price out there.
Roughly 8800GTS 320mb performance for buttload less.

what anbout the MSI RX2600XT-T2D512E, 512MB ATI 16X?
anyone know anything about this one?

I also plan to only spend 1000-1500 for a PCI-EX graphics card, and the plan is wait for Nvidia's new release in FEB and current graphic card prices will drop, and hopefully get HD3850 then.

Should meet your time frame. BTW I too got an E4500(2.2GHZ)+2G RAM ;)

Wait till next month and see what price the geforce 9600gt is going to be.

That should be the best course of action :)
