So I need to get myself a car for next year. I would like to spend about 150k on the car and pay a 20k or so deposit. I see there are many nice cars out there.

The car that just sang to my heart when I saw it was a 2003 Golf 4 GTI. It has 116k on the clocks and is going for 112900 or something.

If I must choose a new car then I will get a Suzuki Swift GLS.

If I don't end up getting the GTI then I just know that I am going to regret it. I just know it, but I also don't want to end up buying a lemon.

1. Is that excessive KMs on the clock? Seems like it will need a service in another 4K KM. That is like 3 months driving for me.

2. How do I go about checking the car out. It is obviously with the dealer at the moment. I can take a mechanic with me but surely he will only be allowed to look under to hood. How do I get AA to check the car out? How much do they charge for something like this. This is something that I would 100% need to do of course.

3. What are the problem components with the GTI and how much do they cost to fix? I have heard clutch, gearbox, aircon are common failure points.

My dad is trying to convince me to go for a new car no matter what. I am paying for the car, and would like to drive something that I will like. I don't know why I am always trying to get my dad's approval. No, I do not live at home in case you are wondering that :p

By the way, the calculator on Market Toyota's website has a built in interest rate (hidden) of about 21.85% .... is that normally what they offer their clients, if it is then I am taking a gun with when I go negotiate :wtf: I mean a percentage or two +/- prime would be more reasonable.

how long are you planning on keeping the car? I bought a new honda jazz recently and totally love it. but then again, I am planning on keeping it till it falls apart :D

that interest is excessive. rather get a proper quote from a financing agency. be prepared to have all your details ready, including an income vs expenditure (with budget left over).

U can ask maybe for the VIN# and check with VW head office and ask for a full report (accidents, ...). Now i am not sure u can do this with VW but i did it with Merc.
Yr most expensive failure will be your Turbo (and thats 20-40k) - and external warranties will usually cover maybe 30% of that.
Wat abt Hyundai i20 1.6 - 91kW, or RunX RSi.

You're unlikely to get below prime. Probably prime+2% or something.

That car is a ripoff for an old GTi. Do not buy that particular one. Look around some more. For R150k you can get a newish (2007) Polo Gti which is as fast and more modern.

Yep...Golf 4 GTi for over a 100k is WAY too much, if it had like 80 000km's on the clock it would have been understandable...but in actual fact you are paying for each kilometre the car has, lol.

Shop around, Golf 4 GTi's are rare but they are not that expensive, all I can think about is cambelt service due soon, check turbo for leaks of oil etc...then your read to go...a for away, ask JK9

/tries his luck...for 75k you can get my 147 2.0 with only 82k on the cock...\luck ran out

Those mcarthy call a car people will do some shopping around for you and call you back with a couple deals, thats worth looking at too

+1 on the jazz
a lil bit of a soccer moms car, but great value, plus its a honda so it wont go pear shaped!

Hehe. Thank you for all the advice guys.

Well I would like to keep whatever car I buy for quite a while. That is why I would like to love the car that I buy. My last car was a 1996 Toyota Conquest 1.6 rs and I loved it. I would still be driving it if it wasn't written off. :(

I had no idea that the car was over priced. Does it matter that it is a "Golf 4 GTi 1.8T Executive"? The leather (pleather?) bucket seats looked super comfy. It is sold by Automark here in Kenilworth. Do they offer extended warranties on used cars?

I will look out for Polo GTis too. By the way, Miway quoted me R2.6K for the Golf 4, which is incidental the same figure that they quoted me for a new Volvo C30 :x More conservative cars will set me back about R1.3k. I will most likely check out multinet, santam, or mutual and federal but I just wanted to check online quotes to give myself a rough estimation of how much I will be paying in total. I am 28 years old by the way.

About what kind of car I like. Well I would prefer a 1.6 because it would feel weird to downgrade even though my previous car was a oldie. I am going to search for Polo GTis and see what I can find. What else should I look at?

By the way at the moment I have about R9k spare cash per month after I pay my bills. So I was looking at 3 - 3.5k instalments and hoping to get insured for about 1.3k. That means I will have about 4k spare per month. I will likely save most of it and use some for entertainment (only thing that I didn't include in my budget). This means that I will have some spare money to fix up whatever car I buy. A car valued at about R120k will take me 3 years to pay off with a 20k deposit. I need the car for work however, so if it does need to be repaired it should be repairable quickly (Probably a bit of a dream).

That is why I was considering a new car. Though I would still love a GTi.

dont get raped on insurance, im sub 25 years and paying R700 for a golf 6 Gti at the moment

it really pays to phone around and screw the bastards, also, brokers tend to get better rates than the direct guys,
and theres also those hippos people who get you 8 quotes...
