I Need New Car Advice

If you are getting the car on finance, then dealer has to do the AA (101) roadworthy. Nothing you have to worry about. It also has to be done by an aprooved AA point from the bank, otherwiae finance won't go through.

If you buying cash, just take it to any AA point and they will check it for you. Where are you situated? If in CT i can send you a list with trustworthy AA points.

Yes, I am based in CT. The car is for sale at Kenilworth McCarthy Toyota. I wasn't thinking about getting a roadworthy, since I expect that it would be. I was thinking about getting the AA Technical Examination (for R655 I believe). I would appreciate any help in the matter.
 
I drove past there yesterday actually.
Car looks in decent nick, but it's always better to buy a new car.
Gti's will always have the poo driven out of them.
And please don't buy a Golf4, mine has always given me issues.

If u really want a Gti of some sorts, make sure it's under 40 000 km :)
 
Okay so how about a brand new Polo 1.4 Comfortline vs Suzuki Swift GLS? I am open to other options in that range.

1. I enjoy comfort more than speed. A nice interior is one of the top things that I am looking for. Also the feel of the ride and the seats.
2. Being a guy I don't want a car that is too girly or weak (Read 1100).

I would suggest you look at the Hyundai I20 as well. I hear these are awesome cars and i think it looks quite nice. Can probably get the 1.6 at the price of the 1.4 polo and 1.5 swift as well. Would suggest you rather buy one of these new cars than a gti with 120 000kms on the clock. You will get a better (albeit slower) drive from one of these new cars than you would get from an old car. Also less troubles from a new car.

Heres a link to the I20, it has a 3 year/60 000km service plan as well. I think this is the best new car for ur price range.

if you can wait just a little longer then the new polos are almost here and they look so much better than the current ones its not even funny

I phoned them and was helped by a guy called Fred. The only problem is he was struggling to log into the system :wtf: So he said that he would call me back. That was 2 days ago, but then again yesterday was a holiday. We will see what happens.

I went to have a look at cars today. The people at VW told me about the new Polos that are coming in on January, but said that if I wanted a current Polo then they would give me a 10% discount. I was happy with that. Though at the end of the day I ended up in Toyota and was very impressed with the Yaris T3+. The seats are super comfy, way better than that of the Polo in my opinion. I was so impressed after my test drive that I started the paper work :D

I am more of a relaxed driver, not into racing or showing off. Also the boot space is amazing in the Yaris. My girlfriend says that it is a girly car, but what does she know. If girls can wear pants then I can drive a Yaris. Heh.

Yea. I finally phoned the Centurion branch. This was at 11:30am. They helped me and said they are going to work out a quote and phone me back. No call yet. But I am patient, for now. Hehe.

Don't worry what other people think. Get the car you like most, as you are going to drive it the most.
 
So, a Yaris, eh? Not the most inspired choice, but then that just doesn't matter to some (most?) people... ;)

If you regard a car as an appliance to get you from A to B, you can do a lot worse than a Yaris. It'll be frugal & dependable. Just don't pick up a fight with a 4x4 - the driver might get mad if you get stuck in his wheel arch. :p

By the way, how much will the car servicing cost me over 5 years, assuming I drive 15K km a year? The sales lady wanted me to take a +2 year warranty for R2600, which I thought year (5 year / 180km), it was either that for a 5 year *maintenance* plan for +R12.5K or something. It seems like I would be better off just paying cash for my services, rather than pay for than plan (on which I will have to pay interest on :o )

A maintenance plan is a big bonus to have, as it covers any and all work done on the car (non-warranty related) - all you pay for during the plan's duration are tyres, fuel and top-up oil. A service plan, not so much, as it ONLY covers whatever your car's service schedule requires & only applies to work done at the fixed service intervals.

With a service plan it's more the choice of paying a lump sum upfront for your services, or being willing to budget for it as & when the time comes. You don't win or lose much either way. I don't have any first-hand experience with Yarii (Yarises? Yariseses?), but I don't imagine your standard services should cost an arm and a leg.

A maintenance plan never hurts. You will have to service the Car at a dealership when on finance, else the warranty can fall away. Dont think it will be more than maybe 1.3k - 1.5k. Or just get a service plan when travelling a lot. Cant be more than R180pm on a Yaris. Weigh the options.

But to be honest. Rather get the Polo than the Yaris.
 
I found that the Polo's seats were not as comfortable as the Yaris and the interior seemed a bit more dated. It is the end of the year and all the factories are closed. So I can select from what stock they have available. I would prefer to get my new car before I go to work on Jan 4. Else I would have to take 3 taxis and walk 2km to get to work.

On the other hand, VW is offering discount on their current models as they are getting the new Polos in the middle of January. So I have to weigh the discount vs having a dated design. Secondly do I upscale to a better model or should I have lower repayments. The choice is not an easy one.

Toyota quoted me R178k on the Yaris. VW is offering 10% off of their current stock.
 
I have driven many AVIS polos and have never been impressed. Was pleasantly suprised by the i20 though.

My 2c.
